Hi Everyone,

This i'm sure is going to be a very stupid question but I'm new to soap making. I am going to make my very first batch on Saturday and ordered all my stuff which came yesterday.. only problem is the stainless steel pot I bought has arrived with a Teflon coating inside.. will this be ok to use or should I send it back and get a different one?

Thanks guys! :?

What do you need that for?
I use a stainless steel pitcher for making my lye solution, a stainless steel pot to heat my hard oils and butters and an ordinairy sturdy mixingbowl to stickblend the the cooled down lye and oils together.
If you intended to use it as a mold; please don't :p You'll never get that soap out of an inflexible pan...
Lye eats teflon eventually; so I wouldn't advise using it anyway.

Better options for a (cheap) mold when you're just starting out are empty milk cartons, pringles cans, plastic drawers/Tupperware stuff and silicone bakeware...

I'd send it back. Teflon is resistent to corrosive substances but it will slowly start to deteriorate after repeated exposure to high heat. I wouldn't trust it but this is just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Oops! I just saw you already got an answer.

Hi,
I’ve got a stainless steel mixing bowl for the lye but wanted to use the pot for the oils and butters..humm maybe I need to buy another mixing bowl to mix them together..
In your opinion would the Teflon pot be ok for the butters at least?
Thank you so much for your help

It would be fine to melt your oils; I just wouldn't use it to mix the lye solution into it. I use a plastic tupperware-type bowl and melt my oils/fats in the microwave.

Great, thank you so much guys. Fingers crossed the first batch works out ok! :)

Using it for heating oils/butters only is no problem at all

Personally, I prefer to heat my oils and butters on my stove; as with the more hard/brittle oils it just takes to long and my mixing bowl starts to get hot :?
Also, most microwaves are not on counter level and I don't think it's a good idea to lift hot oils above your head.
