Anybody have nice recipes including Palm Kernel Flakes? I'm trying to use them up. :)

yes, what Obsidian said. The fatty acid profile in PK is similar to that in coconut. I think it's a bit harder than coconut in the finished bar with being a tad less drying than coconut, and I actually prefer it to coconut. And the price is cheaper too.

Thanks for the responses. I've read not to use over 15%. What do you guys think?

I love PKO flakes. I use them in my 2 main soap formulas in tandem with coconut oil (I find that they create a good synergy together). In one formula, I use 23% PKO along with 8% CO, and in the other formula I use 15% PKO/11% CO/2% Babassu.

Some here might see those combined percents as being a little bit too high for their blood, but what can I say? I'm a bubble-holic. lol With the right superfat, though, it's all good.

IrishLass :)

I too use is along with CO in my 2 main recipes as well. I use a bit more CO than PKO so the reverse of IrishLass.. I stay between 20-25% total.

In the beginning.... of my soaping education, I started a binder and printed out a copy of each oil at 100% of recipe on soapcalc.net to learn more about each oils properties. I'm with Shari - I combine 8% PKO flakes with 12% Coconut oil for the extra hardness properties. I use 50% Olive oil and 2% Sodium lactate, but I'll take anything I can get to find that perfect "hardness" quality.

That's brilliant. I'm dying to learn about properties quicker. I have a wonderful little baby that doesn't allow for this. Hehe. But I still do tons of research and reading when all is asleep. ;). Thanks so much for the tips!

You guys rock. I'm taking it all in! Appreciate all the advice!
