Happy Friday!

I have got a couple questions regarding overheating that I am hoping y'all can answer-

Can an fo cause a soap to overheat?
Can a soap that is soaped cool and put in the mold in a cool room overheat?
Can someone post a picture of overheated soap?

Thanks for any replies :)

Yes and yes. And unfortunately I don't have any pictures of overheated soap. It could crack, it could separate into one hard and one greasy layer and it can even look like stalagmites inside. You could try www.millersoap.com under "botched batches" for photos.

Yes, FO's can cause a batch to overheat...especially florals and spice scents.

Yes a soap that is soaped cool can over heat...especially one with milk and/or honey.

Soap started cracking when gelling.

Overheated can look like alot of things though. Separation...with an oily mess of top is the worse! UGH.

I had an overheat problem this week with a tried and true goatsmilk recipe. I was also using a new FO. I sat it down in the floor in front of the AC vent (my air was on and the house was pretty cool- 72 degrees or less-the floor was cooler) and withing 5 minutes I had full blown gel to the point of bubbles and oil floating on top. I packed the mold in a cardboard box filled with ice in a lame attempt to stop it--didn't work and I had a mess--and a rebatch. I've made this recipe many many times with never a problem until I tried this new FO. I think that was the problem. The soap was not zappy and as it cooled the floating oils went back into the soap but I rebatched anyway. Sorry--didn't take pictures.

Thanks so much for the quick replies. :) Isn't great when you post and the next time you go to your pc you have replies? :)

I have a recipe that I have made hundreds of bars with- I love it; I came up with it myself and it is "the" recipe iykwim. Out of all the batches I have made using this recipe, I have a few batches (maybe 3-4) that have come up with these "chunks" inside them. None of these soaps are zappy. They turn out to be awesome (but ugly) soap.

It happened this past winter (when I was going through a "cool" soaping phase lol :) ). I did three batches back to back (put in a triple log mold). One of the three had the chunks. The only thing different was the fo. It might have been AH Cranberry Fig or Ozark Forest (both awesome smelling btw).

It happened again this past weekend. I soaped 8 batches (warmer temps all the way around). Out of the 8, one did it. It was AH Children's room.

I didn't get cracking- can it overheat without a crack?

Also, it is gm as 100% of the liquid. I am attaching a picture of the one from this past winter.

Yes it could overheat and not crack . Crack is common sign of overheating though. Milk has sugar so combined with a FO can lead to overheating.

Overheating soap

I have had soap heat up and crack! I think it gives it character, I am all for originality......I don't want my soap to look like it was factory made!
