It’s been a pretty heavy and depressing week. The day turned to night by smoke, unhealthy air quality for days, friends being evacuated and some losing their homes, and beloved wilderness burning. I didn’t feel much like making anything for a bit.
Then once I finally started I just kept going! Two batches of soap that I really love! Almost opposite color schemes!
One is colored with purple, red and gold clay, indigo, and activated charcoal. Scented w EOs of orange, peppermint, cedar.
The other is some of my favorite super bold colors from NS, they make my eyes happy! And they have fun names like Eye of the Tiger! Scented w EOs of litsea, tangerine, lemon, peppermint, and a pinch of patchouli to anchor it all through the cure.
The odds and ends turned out as good as the column!
And in the containers are my first attempt at soap dough. I’m pretty excited about the prospects!!!

Ooooooo! So pretty and everything is so even and clear! So nice! I attempted my first kinda-pull-through tonight, I tried to force gel but don't know if it worked, will check tomorrow and post this weekend if it is anything worth seeing. It certainly will not beat yours though!

Yes, definitely Queen of the Pull-through. Soaping has always been coping for me -- even before 2020. It's good to counter chaos and confusion with creative and scientific projects. Plus, it encourages hand-washing! Except I wouldn't want to use yours, they are so pretty.

Using them makes me smile a little. It’s especially good during these trying times. WE DESERVE PRETTY THINGS!

Queen, oh my Queen, the pull through is soooo precise! I’m off for my first try!

Ok, they are in the oven and I’m still alive! I think I learned a few things and experimented with how much to squeeze out. Why do I have to wait till tomorrow? Or (gasp) possibly the day after??!!!!
Help! I can’t get them out of the mold! They were sitting for 20 hrs, put in freezer for 2 more hours. Ow what? Using cans to push it won’t budge.

After you take it out of the freezer, let it sit for about 10 minutes to start forming condensation. Then bang the end of it on a hard surface (concrete works well). Here is a video that shows this.

Arghhhhh I didn’t leave headroom!! I got a smaller one out finally by standing on the can!! It’s been out of the freezer for 30 minutes.

I didn’t leave headroom! Damn! Got this far. Should I freeze again? Run hot water over the mold? Just leave it set for awhile?

Well, you don't want it to defrost. The plan is to have condensation form inside due to the temperature change. So I'd refreeze it, take it out for 5-10 minutes, and then try banging it on the concrete. Even without headroom, you can probably get it out.

For future, some recipes do tend to release more easily than others. For me, those are the soaps high in saturated fats (lard, tallow). That may be because they harden sooner than many other oils, but I'm not entirely sure that's the only reason. Gelling the soap will also help because that also hardens it sooner. You can also line the molds to make it easier to get the soap out, but only if the soap doesn't leak through the seams of the liner (ask me how I know that one, lol). I've successfully used teflon oven liner sheets, cheap dollar store cutting mats, and freezer paper as cylinder mold liners.
