I spent a couple hours last night going over New Directions website. I was looking for any essential oil that was less than $100 per gallon. I consider these at the proper price point for me. But price is irrelevant if they don't smell nice. I'm looking for opinions on which are good and which are not. Any input is appreciated before I start placing orders. Thank you.

Anise Star
Basil Sweet India
Birch Sweet
Blood Orange
Camphor
Cinnamon Bark (Steam)
Cinnamon Leaf
Citronella Java
Clary Sage
Clove Bud
Clove Leaf
Clove Stem
Eucalyptus Dives
Eucalyptus Globulus
Fir Needle
Grapefruit Pink
Key Lime
Lavandin Abrialis
Lemon Eucalyptus
Lemongrass
Orange 5 Fold
Orange Bitter
Orange Sweet
Orange Sweet Dark
Peppermint Japanese
Pine Commercial
Tangerine

I have used eucalyptus and peppermint. I love the scent, and the fresh feeling of peppermint on the skin, but they are irritant, so be careful with the amounts you use.

I like peppermint, lime, lemongrass, cinnamon and clove. My mom LOVES anice but I don't know that its most peoples thing. I like it ok.
I like any of the citrus scents but I guess they don't stick in soap unless you use something to anchor them.

I don't know if you were looking for our opinion on what scents smell good or on the quality of this company. If its the quality of the oils I have no idea!

I'm looking for opinions on the scent, not the company. They already have a decent reputation... but as with any product, you always have to expect some trial and error.

I have used the Tangerine from them..it is so nice!! Really strong..BUT,i have only used that in M&P,as well as some B&B products..NOT CP...
I give this a 2 thumbs up!!! HTH..

I find women love sweet, or smells like sweet food...that seems to be missing from commercial soap

Studies say men like the smell of a cinnamin bunn on a woman

my teen daughter can't stand medicinal smells

no camphor, and cin. is sensitive to some peoples skin, so be careful w that eo. you dont have lemongrass on there, its my fav.

Soaping I'm relatively new to, but I've had a nose for quite some time...

Lemongrass is really nice. It's also has a unisex appeal, which I imagine would be useful in mass production.

I use lavender/peppermint mix in lots of things (60/40 is my personal preference) and it's one of those blends that a broad spectrum of people enjoy. That's the batch of mine that went the fastest so far.

I love citrus too, but I've heard so many scary things about it fading that I've never soaped with it myself so I can't speak as to what issues you may or may not face with that.

Citronella is a like it or hate it scent, mostly because the people who don't like it will immediately think of bug spray when they smell it. I'm one of those.

Ditto what Inodoro Pereyra said about eucalyptus peppermint as well. BBW had a eucalyptus peppermint lotion that I would kill for in a soap, but I don't know what the ratio of the mix was (I'm going to experiment myself a bit with that one).

for soap?

citrus oils fade in CP, some are photosensitizers in leave-on products
spices can speed trace
many key limes are nasty smelling - so not try it without a personal recommendation
cinnamon bark is an irritant, stick with the leaf
clove is an irritant too so be very cautious with levels -
sweet basil smells (to me) like dusty leaves, emphasis on the dust
camphor is an irritant
some people love clary sage - I think it smells dusty and dirty
commercial pine oil will smell like Pine Sol. In fact it's the primary ingredient

from that list I'd recommend
orange 5X
cinnamon leaf
pink grapefruit (it fades too)
lemongrass
peppermint
lemon eucalyptus
eucalyptus globulus
fir needle
maybe star anise

I order from NDA too, and from your list, I have tried peppermint, anise star, orange sweet, and clary sage. I really like all of the scents. Peppermint is wonderful and anise star might be my favorite! It smells just like black liquorice and when you mix it with orange sweet, it is absolutely DEVINE! Lemongrass is great for anchoring a citrus scent in soaps.

Hope this helps!

i would suggest cedarwood. it's nice by itself or as a blender. or red leaf cedar. i'm not at home or i could tell you the official name.

Maybe it's just me, but I rarely like any single note scents. I much prefer blends. Are you going to use blends?

I don't mind blending but my sense of smell is very poor and I'd be afraid that I wouldn't be very good at it. I am open to suggestions and willing to experiment though.

Keep in mind that I haven't been at this for long, but I looove the blend of lemon 5 fold with anise star, or orange sweet with anise star. It smells sooooo good. Also, lavender with peppermint is really awesome.
