I made soap often -- 15 years ago! I've been reading, studying and getting back into the soap scene. The SoapCalc site blew me away. Awesome tool! Last night, I made my first batch in 15 years. The old obsession is still there. My sister and daugher-in-law are coming over in a week or so to have a soap making lesson.

I read a lot of information here and looked at the photos. Beautiful soap, ladies and gentlemen! I still want to know how many pounds of soap it takes to fill a silicone bunt cake pan.

(Gonna make me measure it, huh?)

Thanks, heartsong. I found the answer on this forum about adding water, and multiply the amount of water x .40 to calculate the amount of oil for soap to fill a mold.
Good tip. Glad I found the site. I need to see what's new during the last decade in the soap world so fill me in on outstanding advances!

I ordered some silicone molds from ebay, some of Catherine Failor's molds and various oils, so I should be experimenting soon.

I thought these two are really cute:

 love those molds! the possibilities are endless!

love the silicone molds-a lot of us use the "specialty" silicone muffin pans
the photo gallery is always fun to thumb thru-we have a lot of different forums here with tons of info.

just a fun, informative site when i'm looking for a little inspiration: www.soap-making-essentials.com also www.nizzymoulds.com for his tutorial on room temperature whipped soaps, etc.

happy soaping! :D

Hi CastorFan...love the name. Heartsong and I are Castor fans, too. Love that stuff!

I was away from soapmaking for about 8 years but I only ever made about 15 batches that first time. I've been back and making soap since March of this year and I'm loving it a lot more this time around. Like you SoapCalc blew me away at first. But I spent some time studying it and I like it SO much better than the older options.

And talking to other soapers on forums like this really makes it more fun too!

Looking forward to reading more about you and your new soaping adventures!

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, we learn a ton by sharing.
The silicon molds in the photo came from ebay.
I want to make a "Buttons and Bows" and haven't quite
decided what to do with the leaves....lemon grass/Woodland/Ivy League?
It's all fun.

One thing I've noticed here, that I never heard in the old soap forum days, is
"gelling." I really want to know more about this and saw a thread that leans that way I will follow. Is there a tutorial and explanation of gelling? Purpose? Effect? etc.

I've seen it many times in my soap and worried then that my soap would separate. Now, I'm wondering why some people want to try and create gelling? The only thing I can imagine is that the heat generated helps the soap cure faster. Is that it? What? Help? :?:
