Ok.. Im so excited, yesterday I got my first ordered oils and FO's!! This weekend I'll be soaping Palm for the first time (I'm a new soaper and have made several batches using Tallow)

Question: My Palm came in a gallon plastic jug.. its been here 24 hrs and is at room temp. It's got partial liquid oil in the jug but mostly solid. The coconut oil, of course is all solid. How do I get it out? Do you usually stick the plastic container in a warm pot of water to liquefy it to get enough out for your recipe?

Also, when transferring my FO's to safer containers... do you usually use a funnel? Also whats the best method to to clean those bottles so you can reuse after the FO's gone?

Thanks!

Thats awesome!! I love getting and experimenting with new ingredients... As far as how to get it out of the jug, yes I think the warm water trick should work ... Maybe Fill your tub up if you have one and place the jugs inside of there... just make sure they dont leak or let water into it... depending on how large the containers are.. you could also use a pot of water..pretty much anything you could let it sit in... thats usually the easiest way to do it... some say to use the microwave but I dont really like to put anything in the microwave as it messes with the stuff molecular composition.

For transferring FOs/EOs to a container, you can use a funnel, but be careful ... some EO's will eat plastic... Im not all that experienced with FO's but I would assume that some may not agree with plastic as well... so you might want to use something tougher than plastic, or a pipette of some sort.

as far as cleaning them after theyre empty so you can reuse, dish detergent and hot water should do the trick, followed by soaking them in a weak bleach solution ...

Hope this answers your questions!

Ian

Thanks for the post.
Would you mind sharing where you purchased your products from along with the cost and shipping?
I am attempting to judge pricing out there.
Thanks.

I'd probably just cut the top off the jug and scoop out the oils. Then cover the jug with plastic wrap or transfer the contents into a small bucket with a lid.

For essentail oils, I pour them into a mason jar or tri-pour beaker. Then I pour them into a second one to accurately measure the amount I need for the batch. Mason jars are nice because you can seal whatever is left in the jar. I have a separate labeled jar for each fragrance.

I'm skeptical that you'll ever get the scent out of the contianer. I'd guess that rinsing it out with lye water would be your best bet to kill the scent.

Thanks for the suggestions and Posts! I'll have to look for little buckets to hold the harder oils in as in the big picture that's more reasonable, but for these first couple I'll warm those jugs up!!

@Ranran:
2 oils at Soapers Chioce (columbus foods) 12.95 shipping (zip & weight based)

2 oils at Wholesale Supplies Plus: 6.49 shipping
I would have purchased all my oils from WSP, but their palm is listed from Malaysia and as a personal choice I wanted sustainable palm.

7 FO's from Daystar & 7.95 shipping.

I can't say enough about how fast and complete all 3 of these company's where.

@ Ian.. In researching storing the FO's many say Amber glass is the way to go.. But I've also read that there really aren't any scientific back up on that either.. So, since I got such small amounts to test out (2oz FO) I am using PET bottles. Figure they'll be gone quickly. Thanks so much for the info!!

Another source thats worth checking out is J.Edwards (aka Bulk Natural Oils). They are Massachusetts based, so I go and pickup my order to save on costs, but they DO ship. They supply all the oils for GNC. They also have a large selection of Organic oils. (and all solid oils are in tubs, for easy access! :D )

That little guy looks like a man a little older than me. :) LOL
I saved it too. I hope you don't mind.

oils by nature is good for oils or soapers choice( they wont let you order small amts of butters though, 10 lbs or more).
fos, peakcandles.com, naturesgarden, bitter creek, bertsheaven scent.

oh and those jugs of palm, i just take razor knife and cut the top off. I dont melt and transfer. Why do you want to transfer your fos? most come in glass bottles.

many many (most?) fo's come in plastic tho of course it depends on your supplier. and unless you go through them fast it really is best to transfer to amber glass.

Yup!! :) I agree :) same for EO's... I have noticed that my lavender that I have had in plastic (just cause I ran out of amber glass bottles and dont have the $$ to buy more at the present time) definitely smells differently than when I first purchased it... maybe a vague hint of plastic or something not lavender in it :)
