hi everyone, just finally looked at my soap after about 3 weeks of curing. ok i lied i check it out 3 to 4 times a day . but was wondering should it still have a light oil smell to it? love the soap but can kinda still smell oil.

I've had that experience goldfeever, but as the soap cures it seems to disappear. Mostly noticed it on soap that did not contain any fragrance oils. Did you scent yours with any fragrance? When I first started soaping, I thought 4 weeks was the magic number of cure time and like it was written in stone. Not so....some of my soaps have had to cure more like 6 weeks. It's amazing what an effect an extra 2 weeks in cure time can have on soap.

You are right rubyslippers a 6 week or more cure is most beneficial imho . It is definitely worth the wait .:D

coffee is a great deodorizer but will make the soap dark in color. The coffee leaves no smell.

So.... are you drinking the coffee while you're bathing, Donnie?

 The coffee goes in the soap...
But that's not to say that I've never taken a cup of coffee into the shower 8)

That, my dear goldfeever, is the realllllll problem here! Waiting for cure time to pass is hard on all of us :D Betcha we all cheat a little on that one. I often take an end sliver into the shower after a week of cure time just cause I can't take it anymore!!! I use it and make my assessment and am sometimes sorely disappointed because I just knew this was going to be the BIG one, the Ultimate Bar, the soap of all soaps, my signature bar and then be disappointed  But, when those weeks of cure time have past and I try my fully cured bar it has improved and I have newfound hope that I am getting so much closer to that Ultimate Bar. In all honesty, the only cure for getting through that waiting period is to busy yourself with making other batches

Ruby, I think it is this quest for the ultimate bar that unhinges us all just a little. I am on the same quest and it has almost turned into an obsession!!

I hear ya ORB - I am amassing a lifetime supply of soap and DH keeps asking what are we going to do with all this soap? Don't we have enough yet? I don't sell and only distribute to members of my very small family. Guess it can go into my estate sale  cause a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

What's conditioning for one person may feel drying to another. I often use soapcalc and try plugging in different oils and see what properties it lends to my current recipe. I personally love avocado oil added to my soaps but have read where others don't notice much difference with it added. Jojoba is suppose to be a good conditioner also. Maybe you could try adding an ounce or two of either avocado, jojoba, shea or cocoa butter.

As a note, I didn't mean to offend you or anyone else by my comment "a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do". I was simply referring to myself in that comment and not to anyone else on this forum. I appreciate input from all on this forum regardless of gender and have acquired a lot of helpful advice from all that participate.

ive had some that i used at 3 wks be perfect and others that i could smell "something", cured longer, good.
