Tonight's soaping adventures have been something else. I decided to get brave and try a salt bar. I originally wanted to use my yummy-smelling new bottle of Salty Sailor FO, but some of the reviews on the scent forum said that it moves really fast. Hmm, since I'd read that salt bars aren't exactly pokey to begin with, I decided to skip the Salty Sailor and go with an EO blend that I've fallen in love with. It's 2 parts lavender 40/42, 1 part tangerine, and one part ylang ylang. The little sample bottle I mixed up a week or so ago smells divine, so I decided to use that.

Whee, fragrance picked, I got everything ready, then left my oils and lye solution to cool for a bit. Once they were ready, off I went. Salt bars, here I come! Did I mention that this was also to be my first time using the shiny new ultramarines and oxides? Mmmyyyeah, in hindsight, probably not the brightest idea, but anyway.... everything went fine, I added my EOs to the oils, and then started adding tiny bits and touches of the blue, pink, and plum pigments and mixing. Once I had what looked to be reasonably close the color I wanted, I put the pigments away and added my lye solution.

 It turned the neatest shade of steely grey almost instantly. Okay, I can live with that, and it actually was kind of pretty. I'd been shooting for a calm, restful color, and it fit the bill, so fine. Once it traced, in went the salt. Oh boy, it got thick fast, and I mean thick! Oh crap. Then, to make matters even more interesting, it popped into my head that if a gargoyle came to life and took a crap in a plastic bucket, it would probably look a lot like my soap. Yes, I have a weird sense of humor, and it doesn't always serve me well. The notion that I'd just made a bucket full of gargoyle feces triggered a fit of the giggles. Not the best timing, this was my very first experience with having to really rush to the mold and try to cram an uncooperative soap in, and I was in the middle of a giggle fit. Oi.

Anyway, I managed to get the gargoyle poo slopped into the mold, and we shall see how it turns out, but I'm thinking it's going to be one homely soap, lol. I supposed I should be discouraged or frustrated, but right now it's just funny. I'll add pics once the poo's unmolded and cut. :D

LMAO! Gargoyle poo!     Gave me the giggles too! oh and congrats on making your poo bars...I'd try one.

The last soap that I made was tto/lavender in a clay bar with bentonite clay. Except I put a little too much and the soap looks like bars of concrete.
I understand where you're coming from.

Oh, Tess....!

My first CP salt bars had a similar (though different) situation develop. I decided to use this gorgeous purple corn powder I had bought from a herbal store as a colour; stirred it in.....and I immediately got baby poo green!!! Luckily I had a brand new liquid pigment in bright pink sitting on my bench, so I grabbed it and added enough to change the colour to a more acceptable pinkish brown.....and my Desert Sands Spa Salt Bars were born

My salt adding worked fine though. I soaped at about 35 degrees celcius (95 F) for both my oils and lye. When I added the salt the mix actually loosened up a little and was quite nice and pourable. I used a ratio of 80% salt to oil weight.

Will love to see pics!

Tanya :)

LOL

Tess -- I feel your pain! The soap I made last night turn very dark brown in the pot and reached heavy trace very quickly. I had gargoyle poop soap this morning, too :? Complete with little green flecks of vegetation (spearmint) :?

It didn't look so bad once I cut it, though.

In the past , I have made several mistakes.

...But in the present , I still made several mistakes. Hahaha!!

I am a new soapmaker from Thailand nice to meet everybody.
I have my own soap blog . If you are interested in , please copy my link below.

I went to sleep assuming that this batch was going to be a learning experience at best, as I really didn't have a lot of hope that it'd turn out to be usable soap. I cut it, snickered at it, and went to bed.

This morning, I was pretty surprised to see that the color's somewhat better. Still not exactly what I'd intended, but it's picked a bit of a blue tint back up again. The cut sides aren't pretty, they're definitely grainy and rough-looking, and there are some corners missing little chunks, but it's definitely something I'm going to use once it's cured, just to see.

One bar didn't survive the cutting process last night, I botched it up and decided to try rolling it into balls. It sort of worked, then I wasn't happy with the durface on the balls, so I looked around and spotted a small wool sponge I picked up at the sponge docks, and decided to try texturing the surface with the wet sponge. It took some goofing around with it, but it kinda worked.

Not the prettiest soaps in the world, not by a long shot, but they turned out better than I'd expected. :)

They don't look too bad! That is a rather nice bluish color. Maybe close to "battleship grey" haha.

I wonder what they'll be like one they've cured! Did the scent turn out well?

Tess, if gargoyle poo is wrong, then dammit, I just don't wanna be right. I like the color a lot actually! Very spa-like...in a ...you know...gargoyle poo sorta way.

They don't look bad at all!

Colouring CP can be such a PITA sometimes. I have had many batches turn hideous colours, only to turn the right colour within a day or two later, like yours.... whew!

Pretty poopies!

Srsly, I agree, it looks both rustic and handcrafted and spa-like and luxurious. You may have a hit on your hands. :)
