Oatmeal Honey Soap Help?? Suggestions

I am going to make up a vanilla oatmeal Honey soap ~ My first time working with these ingredients ~ just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or tips??

I just amade some GM oatmeal vanilla soap a few weeks back. I was really satisfied with the soap. I made a 2 lb batch and used oatmeal that I processed in my food processor. I processed it until it was real fine. I did have a .5 bottle of EO vanilla that is used for fragrance. The soap turned out a real light tan. I should be able to use it in a couple of weeks.

I am going to order some FO's today, from what I have been reading on the forum vanilla fo's can be very unpredictable as far as the color you will achieve. I still want to use some. Most people like the scent.

I have only used FO'S one time, I have always used EO'S, this can become expensive. I ordered Cocoa Cabanna from WSP and I love the smell. The whole room has had a fragrant smell since I made it.

I am trying to decide if I want to make GM carrot soap today or the Lemon Verbena. I have used carrot baby food and it makes a pretty orange bar of soap, I will add honey and almond oil.

Decisions! Decisions! It will be one or the other!!

lynn, thanks for your response ~ did you use the whole .5ml bottle for the 2lbs? That's what I have to scent it ~ It is expensive, man does it smell great in the bottle, can't wait to make it!

being a beekeeper, I recommend you try to get raw honey for your soap, it is best for the skin, besides what you buy at the stores....if you can get it.

use small amounts at a time as you stir in honey, otherwise it glops together and will ooze from your finished bars....which sometimes, people like, because you can see the honey. No more than a TBSP all together, depending on the size of your soap batch.

I love doing honey oatmeal, it is a good selling soap, so good for your skin.... and just an awesome way to add natural stuff....so yummy.

I love to make honey and oatmeal soap too. One hint I'd give you is to be sure to grind up the oatmeal more than you think you'll need to because it gets a little rough if it's not ground enough.

I've become fond of using baby oatmeal in my OMH soap. It's not as scratchy to me as the finely ground oat flour I was using previously. I use 1 tbsp. ppo.

I use 1 tbsp. ppo of honey. To keep the honey from oozing droplets out of my finished soap, I like to take my honey, dissolve it with a little of my water amount, and then add it to my lye water once the lye water is completely cooled (very important). The honey water warms the lye water back up and turns it a burnt orange color, but it never causes any extreme reaction like it would if you added the honey to the water before adding the lye. Been there done that- scary, hissing reaction :shock:. But adding already diluted and dissolved honey to cool lye water is very tame (at least it is for me). Besides preventing honey drops from oozing out of my soap, I've found that adding my honey this way also helps to prevent my honey soaps from overheating in my mold. I'm thinking that this is because adding it to the lye water takes some of the fiery wind out of its sails.

Just had to say that I Oats & Honey or OMH is my favorite soaps to make!! I just made a 4 lb batch of each of them last week. My only 2 cents is just beware of temps because you don't want a volcano...been there done that...not fun :wink:

I do the same as Irishlass with the honey and add to lye mixture. The bright orange goes away in the soap and it ends up quite pale. I also use raw, organic honey and one year on, I can still smell the gorgeous smell of fresh honey in my soap. I usually don't use fragrance oils in my GM Honey and oatmeal soap because it just doesn't smell natural to me. I use 1 tablespoon of honey per 500g of oils.

I make an oatmeal-honey soap as well. If you are adding the honey at trace, try warming it a little, but not too hot or it will seperate out of the soap. Good luck! If you do make some, please post some pics.

I never insulate any of my goat milk soaps (honey or not) because I don't want them to gel. I generally use shallow Milky Way slab or individual moulds. I cover with plastic wrap to avoid ash though. :wink:

I made it last night ~ it is still in the molds and I can't believe still warm to the touch ~ It looks great ~ light tan/brown color now, I added just a little honey and also vanilla eo 5ml ~ I was so worried about the vanilla eo seizing up the soap because I read about that ~ but it did not!! YEA!! and I added oatmeal and ground vanilla beans too ~ I'll let you know how it looks when I can unmold and cut it!

very nice. Yeah don't insulate it or it will overheat with that honey. It probably will turn a darker color. My oatmeal honey GM soap turned almost a pumpernickel color.

I haven't used Vanilla FO but I've read many times that it turns your soap really dark. Just saying so you know. :wink:

I used .5 ml of vanilla to my oatmeal soap. I used heavy whipping cream and also added shea butter. The soap turned out a light tan, the vanilla did not add a lot of scent. I think that 2 bottles would have been better. I think that I paid about $8 for the one bottle. It was not worth the $8 for no more scent that it produced, plain would have been just as good.

Does anyone use heavy whipping cream? I do not know if it is just me, I think it is as good as any GM soap that I have made. I still have not made a plain batch of soap without milk. I have some Lemon Verbena and want to make it without milk to see how it turns out. I think I will color it a nice lemon color!

I am starting vacation this Saturday and we are going to the beach, I don't know if I can stand not soaping for a week. I am tempted to take supplies with me and make some for Christmas. If not this coming week, I'll really have to get busy the next week as I want it to have time to cure. I have several people at work requesting some as Christmas gifts.

I just got through lots of torture this past week. I had to take a state test for my RHU (Registered Health Underwriters) designation and it was pure torture. I passed!! What a week, I can truly go on vacation. I feel so good now. I studied hard this past summer, worked and soaped, mostly soaped!! You can tell I am ready to go!
