I measured out oils for a batch of soap in the morning, have to go and buy lye first thing.
At least I would have my oils melted together tonight. Put them on low, but...

Suddenly, the computer was free & I started reading posts- forgot my oils!
I just realized that the funny smell was my oils smoking! I turned it off and
covered the pot, but I'm wondering- how much of my oils is in the air?
I realized that my eyes were burning from the fumes- not exhaustion!

It has been about an hour-Have I ruined my batch? I could weigh
what I have & compare it to what I originally had then make up the
difference with the same percentages- but- does overheating the oils ruin
them? and whose to say which oil actually was lost? It was CO, OO &
Palm. I imagine the OO would (evaporate? or burn?) first.

What do you think? Should I throw it all out?

I would thrown it away.

I'm not a specialist, but I guess the fatty acid has been destroyed.

Good luck with the next batch!

I did that once... I don't remember how long I left the oils but they were so hot that when I put my stick blender in them it warped the stick blender. I threw caution to the wind (as usual) and made the soap... it turned out pretty well. I say it can't hurt to try!

Thankfully they didn't combust! :)

They will probably still make soap, but maybe not the greatest soap.....If you dont like it, you can always use it for cleaning/laundry and the like.

For melting butters I recommend the microwave, a crockpot, or a double boiler (by and far my last choice).

In a pan on the burner - NEVER.

For some reason, I hate the idea of using the microwave for melting oils/butters. No reasonable reason, just one of my weird mental blocks. Double boiler's a huge pain. I frequently use a crock pot. On occasion, I will melt them in a pan on the stove - set to warm - and I stay with it to the bitter end. (I've found my multi tasking skills have ... left me. If it's not in my face I'll forget about it! Actually caught sugar water on fire once. ) Crock pot is definitely the best choice for me. I'd ditch the burnt oils myself.

I"d be worried that hte burnt smell in the oils would permeate the soap...unless you want to do campfire scented soap?

When I got up this morning & opened the pot- it smelled bad!

I threw it all out and decided to use a timer so I won't get involved & forget.

Yes,Hestia, I guess it is time for me to admit, too, that my multitasking days are over.

Hard to accept, though. The scary part is that my husband, who has always
been the one to worry about fire, and check the stove before he goes to bed
actually went to bed without doing that. What a pair we are!

oh no! I've done that too. Think I'll sit for 5 minutes at the computer and before I know it, it's 20 minutes later!

Sorry it wasn't salvageable!
