I've been making soap for a while now... and another thread "Oatmeal" made me think of this question...
What happens if you use candle fragrance oils in cold process soap making?
I know that FO's for bath and body should be skin safe.. but what happens if you use a candle FO in a soap batch?
Has anyone done this? I am sure some soapers have done it without knowing especailly when we buy lots of FO's that soapers are selling off.

Just curious.....

My understanding is that, for an FO to be skin safe, it must contain under certain amounts of certain ingredients. So for some people, you could probably use a not-skin-safe FO and they would be fine, but other people could have a reaction.

Also, some candle FOs won't stand up to the lye monster.

Most FOs so "skin safe" or "soap and lotion safe" on the bottle.

Simple bottom line answer, you could cause very bad skin irritations. They are body safe for a reason, candle fo's contain constituents that are to strong for skin in certain percentages and/or restricted from use in skin safe products. Anyone making and selling should really know the answer, sorry that may come off a snide, but it is true. This goes for anyone even for personal use to use a non skin safe fo. When you buy destash fragrances ask the seller the brand, name of fo and look up the info. If they refuse or do not know do not buy it or use it in candles only

It is everyone's responsibility as a seller to identify and know what you are using

Some FOs can be used for soap as well as candles. It is always best to be sure before using; as cmazah stated, FOs that are not skin safe can cause irritation.

I agree--that's why I feel the need to make sure what we used--I felt uneasy using the scent without knowing more about it

I use my FO's in both candles and soaps, HOWEVER, I make sure that when making soap, I am using a fragrance that falls within the guidelines of the IFRA for soap or a wash off product.

Very true.. and all my oils are skin and body safe and good for both soap and candles. Candle FO's are made to withstand the heat of the flame and give off a good scent throw. Many soap groups have soapers who sell off FO's they no longer use and there is a possibility of Candle FO's being there as well. Sensitivity is a big issue.. and I was just curious if anyone had used Candle FO's in soaping and their results....
