is cp better or m&p?

That depends on why you want to start making soap.

I only do CP (and occasional batches of re-batch/HP) because I want to control everything (well, at least as much as possible) that goes into my soap. CP allows me to play with ingredients, custom design formulae that benefit my particular skin type and conditions, etc. I also enjoy the science behind it.

Compare to MP, however, it is a lot more difficult to do intricate designs with CP. Some MP soaps truly resemble works of art. And MP does not require curing time (typically 4 - 6 weeks for CP; I prefer 2 to 12+ months, depends on the kind of soap), so i fyou want to make something you can use right away, MP is the way to go.

edit: I also want to add there is no reason why you cannot do both. Many people here do CP/CPOP/HP/MP, body lotion, bath bombs, and everything else! :)

I think I have heard from some UK soapers that their MP outsells their CP in the UK but it all depends on your market. It also depends on what you want in your final product. You could start with MP and graduate to CP. :)

First off, welcome to the forum!

Seifenblasen summarized pretty well what the merits of each method are.

I do CP because I prefer how the soap works with my skin which tends to be dry.

Either are fun and worth exploring.
