Hello! I'm so glad I found this group! I want to start making goat milk soap. I'm one of those people who just jumps in and believes it will work.... Things are usually ok, except in the kitchen. I'll be making this soap in the kitchen, I suppose, which is scary. I've never made soap before, so I'm glad to have a group to run to with questions and concerns. I'm looking forward to reporting progress and making new friends.

I've looked around SMF and I'm so impressed with the knowledge and advice being shared. :D

have you been to millersoap.com?
it's a bit disorganized, but a wealth of knowledge resides there!

Good morning!
I'm right there with you... I'm a newbie as well :)
I hope to be working with goat milk at some time during my soap making adventure so I am looking forward to watching your progress.
Good luck!

I haven't been to Miller Soap, but I'll sure take a look. I really believe my first attempts at goat milk soap will be successful! I'm sure it's too early to tell, so I'll report on it in about a month. Most recipes I've read say to allow 4 weeks for cure. I made a batch yesterday and made another this morning. I added a smidge more essential oil to this morning's recipe because I didn't think yesterday's was fragrant enough. Now, I wait...

My husband was confident I'd blow the house up with some horrible lye miscalculation, but all went well! If this truly is deemed a success, I'll be glad to share the recipe. Thank you for the encouragement!

small problem?

My goat's milk soap came out great! It has a white-ish, almost ashy looking film on it, but I've read that's normal? Ph is fine and the soap feels great. I've read some recipes that say to cover the soap as it cures, and some say not to.

I made some olive oil soap, too. It turned out pretty ugly, frankly. Ph is fine and the soap lathers and moisturizes great, but it's pale, pale around the sides and edges. It almost looks like it dried out or something?? Same thing: cover/don't cover while it cures?

What causes this? Can it/should it be prevented? The olive oil soaps I've purchased for years do NOT look like this. lol

Can you repost this in the soaping area and include a picture if possible?

Thanks!
