Thought i'd be making soap.
I picked up a 3 pack of castile soap a couple months back. The way it cleaned EVERYTHING got my curiosity up.

I'm puzzled why people gave up lye soap for detergent types considering the few soaps i've made clean much better (feel better) than 99% of the brand names.

Oh Hey!I'm new.

Same four years ago I was a Candlemaker only but all t took was one bar of handmade soap and I was into finding out how I could make soap that felt as beautiful as the bar I had been given!!!!

Welcome to the forum. The answer to your question as to why detergents became so much more prevalent in commercial soap production is probably an economic one. Synthetic detergents are cheaper than cold pressed plant oils to produce. The bars typically don't last as long so you have more repeat business and then there's that whole doesn't leave soap scum marketing hype like with the current dove commercial except people don't realize that when it washes clean like that it takes all your body's moisture with it too drying out your skin.

Just a side note. I love how people tell me that I shouldn't be washing my face with soap and I have to go back and explain how my natural soap benefits the skin as opposed to a store bought soap.
