My new signature soap, the sakura (cherry blossom) tree is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and celebrated around the world in annual festivals. The sakura tree blossoms once a year which lasts only a short few weeks; it is an omen of good fortune and is also an emblem of love.

Inspiration for this soap came from looking at the other sakura / cherry blossom products available on the market. I noticed that aside from the name, none of these products had anything to do with the actual sakura tree itself. In other words, I was being sold a lie. Determined to make a "real" sakura soap, I began by developing my own custom soap calculator to find a recipe that is perfectly balanced to the recommended standards for average skin.

Special ingredients include:

* Sakura leaves & flowers; I first create a sakura tea which is used as a water base for the soap, and then proceed to dry the flowers and leaves and mix them with the remaining ingredients. Considering that the essential oils of the sakura flower cannot be extracted with current technology (it just isn't worth the cost), only artificial fragrances exist. I chose not to add any fragrances to this soap, so this is as real as it gets!

* Japanese sea salt; obtained from a remote island off the coast of Japan far away from industrial contamination. This gourmet salt is extracted using a traditional and time-consuming method of filtering sea water with fire and bamboo.

* The finest grass fed beef tallow; Japan is serious about their livestock to produce very tender and succulent meats that melt in your mouth, such as kobe beef, shabu-shabu and yakiniku. Likewise, I use un-bleached rendered beef kidney suet, which is the best fat available.

Other ingredients include: Castor oil, cocoa butter, coconut oil, mango seed butter, goats milk, brown cane sugar, kaolin clay (rose), titanium dioxide, and sodium hydroxide for saponification.

Very Lovely!

Are you close to DC? One of my favorite things about living here are those beautiful trees around the tidal basin.
We have to go at least once each season and have a picnic on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial and enjoy the blossoms.

I love the way you described your process and intention. It makes for a very special bar.

Beautiful! I love everything about it...your packaging, photo and descriptions.

Beautiful!!! I love everything about it! What kind of paper is that that you used to package?

Thanks! I couldn't have done it without the help of this forum, such a valuable resource...

I'm not in DC, I actually obtained my leaves and flowers from Japan during a trip last October. The paper wrapping is also handmade, from junk mail.

You should be very proud. That is lovely. Well done on the calculator too. I wish I could try it but I'm using a Mac and it's not happening for me.

Lovely soap and I tried your calculator and can't wait to play with it some more. So useful to have all of those variations side by side! Thank you for sharing it.

Lovely soap and packaging, I also make handmade paper from time to time when I save up enough recycled paper. Beautiful. Love the story.

Relle.
