I've asked the supplier of my FOs for the MSDS for the scents I've gotten from them but they're asking me for batch numbers.

Are the being awkward or do they really need these? I wouldn't have thought the MSDS should differ from batch to batch?

If they really do need these it's no major issue other than I'm at work right now so will have to dig the bottles out when I get in

I think different batches have slightly varying quantities of certain substances on an analysis page so you need the correct MSDS for each batch if you are selling.

Ok thanks. Not for selling just for checking for vanilla etc so I know to look out for discolouration

A Material Safety Data Sheet may not list any ingredients especially in any proprietary product such as fragrance. Some MSDS do, many don't. You're better off just asking if there is vanillin in the blend.

You still may not get that. Fragrances are usually proprietary. If the supplier has bought the FO from someone rather than formulate the FO themselves, even the supplier might not know. They might be able to tell you the vanilla content, but nothing more. Just saying to not be surprised if you don't get a lot of info.

I also concur with everyone. Most fragrances come under the protection of "Trade Secrets," and very few will give you the answer you are looking for. You can try asking for the vanilla content or just run a small test sample of the fo

That's why I really like Nature's Garden -- they give their recommendation of the max % to use, the IRFA info, the MSDS, the vanilla content, user reviews, and how the FO performs in CP soap. All right in the listing for each FO, so I can see all that before I buy and not have to ask. But even they don't give full ingredient listings, and I don't expect that. I'm sure it's a huge amount of work for them to do this, but I truly appreciate their thoroughness.

Specific Gravity included on the MSDS sheet? I ran into one infamous FO vendor who made her own MSDS sheets up and refused to include that information. I got so much malarkey from her I told her she could keep her FOs and I'd never order from her again. Proprietary blend info I can understand. SG? Give me a break. You need that info to accurately track inventory in SoapMaker3.

So I asked them for the vanilla content of the 6 FOs I have purchased and this is the reply:

Hi Sonya,

Not even our Vanilla will discolour as we have made it that way, we also own a contract manufacture business and have made endless products for the high street chains etc so have a lot of experience in this area.

What now?

At this point I would do small test batches to see how the FO act. Not much else you can do.

I would write back to them with a list of FO suppliers that supply that info and tell them that I'll be taking my business where I can get the information I need as a soapmaker and be done with them - but that's just me ;)

I've had no problems at all with orders being on time etc they just seem unwilling to advise on the vanilla content. I guess I will just have to try them
