I am wanting to make a batch of pepperminty shampoo bars. I would like them to tingle my scalp similar to how Paul Mitchelll Tea Tree shampoo tingles your scalp. Paul Mitchell claims this comes from a combination of Tea Tree and peppermint. Is this true, or will just the peppermint do it?

Here is a shampoo recipe I found online:

From: http://www.sudsandscents.com/june2003news.htm

Super Suds Shampoo Bar

Makes 1-lb of shampoo (or 10-12 bars)

Ingredients

Metric
5oz Coconut 180 gms
1oz Cocoabutter 30 gms
4oz Castor Oil 120 gms
3oz Palm 90 gms
1oz Jojoba Oil 30 gms
2oz Sunflower 60gms
2.21oz Lye
(includes 5% discount) 66.30gm
6oz Distilled Water

Optional: Add 1-2 teaspoons of desired essential oils.

*

A nice, mild, lathering bar.
*

Combine oils and heat gently. Use temperatures between 100 - 125 deg. F (38 deg. C)
*

Combine lye following good safety procedures. Once lye and oil are at desired temperatures, combine by adding lye/water solution to oils. Not the other way around.
*

Stir for the first 15 minutes, then stir for 5 minutes at 10-15 minute intervals.
*

Check to see if thickened. If it looks like a thin milkshake or thin custard it is ready to pour into mold(s).
*

Add optional ingredients (herbs, essential oils, etc.) and pour into mold.
*

Cover, insulate and allow molding time between 24 - 48 hours. If the soap is still soft - allow to cure for a few more days to firm.
*

Slice as desired and allow to cure 3 weeks.

Mold time: 24 - 48 hours
Cure time: 3 -4 weeks

Using this recipe what amounts of essential oils would you recommend to get that tingly feel I mentioned above?

Any changes you would make to the recipe?

Thanks!

Welcome to board! I recommend you use no more than 2% of essential oils for your recipe. Play around with it in http://www.soapcalc.com you, click on soap qualities at the top of that site and read through that, then go back 9 oil calc or 18 oil calc and click on each of oils/butters to your left & read the soap qualities & fatty acid values for each of oil/butters.

That's the beauty of making soaps; you figure what qualities you want your end product (soap) to have and combine the correct the % of oils with correct amount of lye (whether you discount or not) don't forget the correct amt. of H2O or Milk & you have a soap that's unique and truly your own creation. thew that was a mouth full! Don't be afraid of experimentation!

Pepperming

I recall using that Paul Mitchell soap and recall the tingly, cool feeling. I'm not sure what created that sensation. I've used my soaps as shampoo for quite a while. I have a Geranium and Tea Tree bar in the shower right now and it doesn't create the same, tingly feeling. I recently made a Peppermint and Spearmint soap and have used that for shampoo as well and it didn't create tingles either. I do recommend combining Spearmint with Peppermint though. The result is a very uplifting, minty scent that's a little sweeter smelling than Peppermint used alone.

i would bet its the added menthol into their shampoo... that stuff will make you feel nice and fresh !!... thats what provides the little bit of searingly fresh feeling lol

I bet you guys are right with the menthol.

I will try tea tree and peppermint anyway. Perhaps tea tree, peppermint, and spearmint!

Thanks!

I love all three of those scents so it would be hard to choose, my advice is to test out the ratios on a cotton ball to see if you like the scent before deciding to scent your batch .... and you might find this link helpful...

its a EO scent blend calculator :)

http://www.rainbowmeadow.com/infocenter ... select.php

hope that helps!!

and menthol can be bought in crystal form, from what ive seen its pretty cheap and i intend to begin experimentation with it (its my belief that any eucalyptus soap lacking menthol as an additive will not meet my requirements for pungency...but then again ive got strict standards ;) )

I never knew that............never thought about it. Interesting, thanks!

be cautious with the menthol - there is a very fine line between tingling and burning.

very true....

played a prank on my little bro with gold bond once.... hehe the good ole gold bond in the boxer shorts!!

hehehe.

I have used it in my dog shampoo bars and for salve. Not everyone likes the smell of neem seed oil. It is good for the skin though.

You can use Neem seed oil in your shampoo to get that tingling feeling.
