What would mink oil be used for in making soaps? I know my hubby has a lot of the jars that they give him with purchase of his work boots. Unfortunately they are unlabeled except for "MINK OIL" on the lid, so I am unsure if they are purely mink oil or a mix.

Anyone know anything about this, I skimmed the web and all I found was that mink oil is good for eczema.

hhhmmmm, interesting idea. I would be interested to see what anyone else says. If it can be used in soap, i wonder if it is any different than using any other animal tallow?

It does have its own check box on soapcalc.net and looks very different from tallow when I click and look at the values. I'm still curious though.

Typically, are animal tallows similar?

I don"t know about processed mink oil, but raw stuff straight from the animal stinks!! so be aware of that ...

This does not smell at all, hubby has used it on his boots in the past and there was no odor and it looks very white. So this leads me to think some kinda charcoal filtering. (Initially I typed 'chocolate' instead of 'charcoal' lmao)

Mmmm...chocolate filtering!!

Supposedly, it's very good for the skin (reduces wrinkles, helps to retain moisture, etc) and has an long shelf life. I don't know for sure. I've read about it and I'm just passing on info. I'm not saying you should use it; as Obsidian already mentioned, it is manufactured for shoes and you don't know what's in it.

Having worked on mink farms during pelting time, the raw stuff is pretty rough, but maybe after it is rendered it"s okay.. It does soak into the skin well thats for sure, and doesn"t wash of no matter what you do--smell and all in the raw state....

Mink oil for boots is a mix of different things, often beeswax, lanolin or silicone. I wouldn't use it in soap.

Thanks obsidian, that was exactly what I was looking for. Hmmm does that mean that it could be ok as a cream then? Hypothetically speaking. Because who knows exactly what's in this if its a mix.

I wouldn't use it for cream either. Its not made for the body and could have contaminates, best to leave it for leather use. If you want to try mink oil, buy some thats body safe.

Do you have any saddles? Or leather furniture or car seats?

No, I have one thing that needs some tlc. It is a very dried out collar that is made out of leather I have it packed away because I didnt want to ruin it.

I work with leather for a living and often see leather that has been treated with all kinds of stuff in the name of "conditioning" the leather. Mink oil is pretty tenacious, oily stuff. It's great for work boots, chore gloves, hunting dog collars, work harness, and other leather items that see hard, frequent use in all kinds of weather.

I personally would never use it on fine leather items, however. Mink oil can permanently darken the leather color. It can make a real goopy mess if it's applied too heavy. It can cause certain types of dyes to rub off from some items, so you could end up with a mink-oiled purse or saddle that will leave interesting marks on your clothing until the layer of oily surface dye wears off.

I don't think I would sell it just because its one of those things that you get free with purchase of work boots. At least I hope it was free, my husband never uses it! He buys the synthetic stuff and sprays it. Oh well the dogs will have some pretty collars now... and i'm going to make the work gloves look very nice :D
