Hi all, i have a bit of a dilemma! I have been making lotions and creams for about 3yrs, now my neighbor who is a massage therapist wants me to formulate a Massage Lotion which has to be "nut free" and "all natural. My problem comes in giving the lotion good glide without using nut oils or chemical additives. This is what i have come up with so far:

90 gm organic sunflower oil
40 gm vegetable wax(Lanette N)
30 gm cold pressed avacado oil
30 gm stearic acid
20 gm unrefined cocoa butter
19 gm cold pressed grapeseed oil
1650 gm reverse osmosis water
Preservative @1.5%

Can someone suggest something that i could omit or add to give better glide without balling or sticking?

You people are great and usually i can just browse the forum and get the answer that i need, but alas not this time!!

Thanks Trish

I'm a LMT and have tried many lotions and creams and oils. Lotions for me never have good glide and always end up drying up and getting sticky. I think it is just the way lotions are. Cream would be better but they aren't pumpable. For the past 4 years I have used straight EV Coconut Oil. Delicious. Stays on top of the skin and remains workable forever but doesn't leave people feeling sticky after. You do have to warm it somehow before use and because it is thin it tends to be splashy. Not sure how CO would be incorporated into a lotion? Maybe fractionated CO?

Is fractionated coconut not considered a "nut" oil? cause if it isn't i would definitly try it.

I think the stearic acid might be making too much drag. I'd try it with ewax instead (polawax @ lotioncrafter are great, but that's imo)

How cool is that, you learn something new every day! If that's the case i'll try subbing some of the sunflower for the FCO, do you think it may give this lotion a little more glide?

What would be a good sub for the stearic? I have tried without the stearic and it becomes too waxy, so i cut back the wax and added some stearic.

Or cetyl alcohol, I think.

:D Hi all, like i said i'm letting you know what happened! I took out the stearic, changed my emulsifier, added FCO, took out the Sunflower, upped the percentage of oil and VOILA i have an amazing MASSAGE LOTION WITH GREAT GLIDE!!! There were 11 test batches, starting with the base formula for my Colloidal Oatmeal Lotion. The therapist just called this morning and said "WE HAVE A WINNER" she tried it on several different clients and said there is no drying, no sticking, no balling, and lots of glide!! I'm so happy, lots of people told me that it coud not be done, but with all of your suggestions an a lot of perseverance i have finally formulated a "nut free, chemical free, petroleum free, paraben free, vegan friendly massage lotion. Thank you so much for your help, i am eternally grateful!!! :D

Would u mind sharing your final recipe with the changes? I am a soon to be LMT and I am looking for a good all natural massage lotion/cream recipe.

This is an old thread and this person has not been in here for 1 1/2 yrs, so you probably won't get your answer :( .
