The recipe I've been messing with only has an INS is 115, much lower than the "ideal" of 136+. I know numbers don't tell the story, but the other batches I've made have been 140+ and I'm concerned this recipe might end up too soft. I don't want to have to redo it! Should I increase the CO and with it the superfat?

40% PO (or lard, I haven't decided yet)
10% OO
10% Castor
10% CO
10% Shea Butter (or should I use Cocoa Butter, or 5% of each?)
20% PT

I played around some more and being the impatient type, just went ahead and made it. Thanks to the great advice here, it went perfectly. Took less than an hour from copying the recipe to cleaning up the mess. I even had time to, on a whim, add a touch of sugar and ground oats at trace. Took about 3 minutes to completely trace (didn't use SB), got it in the mold just in time.

Not sure if I should be trying to gel or not. I wrapped it in a towel and put it on the stove with the oven on and will see what happens.

I used PO probably mostly because of "label appeal". I didn't want my first soap I give away to make anyone go "ew gross I'm not using this." I'm more inclined to use lard though. As easy as it was to make this soap, I might do it again with lard someday for comparison.

I make two different pine tar soaps.

For my BIL with psoriasis I make my mild recipe but with 20% pine tar.
For my landscaping neighbor who worries about poison ivy I make a coconut oil soap with a low superfat and 2% pinetar.

I used palm, castor, coconut, and cocoa butter, plus 20% pine tar. And lavender EO, it's masked the scent really well. 7% superfat. Not sure why I didn't add olive oil, I think I took it off and messed with the amounts of the rest and got the best numbers without it. Crossing my fingers it's a good recipe, it looks good so far.

It looks good. Please report back and let us know how it is. I'm curious about the lather - if it lathers well or not. Thanks.
