I was thinking a giving a go at CP soap making as that seems to be the one I'm finding on the internet a lot.
The method seems straight forward (as long as I follow it precisely) and I might even give it a go with some essential oils.
The question I have is, on all the videos and tutorials there's a point where you put the additives and essential oils. Now I may be being a little paranoid, but my ultimate game it to make some Rhassoul's mud soap as I used to have it all the time when I was growing up until The Body Shop stopped stocking it.
Does anyone know any good recipes or rules of thumbs when adding powders to the oils and lye? I don't want to over do it but can't seem to find anything similar I could use as a guidance.
Thanks in advance guys

here is a link with a recipe of sorts for mud soap on it. She does however, confuse 'base oils' with 'essential oils' in her directions. Be sure to use a soap calculator before you try this! I like the one on soapcalc.net but there are otherse too. Good luck

peteyfoozer, I deleted that link as it is not a good resource for beginner soapers and could be dangerous so I don't want it posted as a reference.

Confusing essential oils with carrier oils, soaping in a skillet...nope. Not a good reference.

no prob agriffin! I had only been thinking of the different ing that seemed to go into a mud soap. Thanks for correcting it!

I add fragrance to my oils before adding the lye. You can also add at trace...its a matter of preference.

I would add clay to a bit of traced soap, mix it up until it's not clumpy and then add it to the rest of the base.

I've also stick blended clay into the oils. It was a bit clumpy. But really either way.

I would do about 1/2 tablespoon per pound of oils on clay.

So...take a basic recipe.

Basic Vegan
5 oz Palm Oil
5 oz Coconut Oil
5 oz Olive Oil
1 oz Castor Oil

Go to soap calc and plug in the numbers to get your lye/water amount. Adjust the oils to get the numbers you want.

Add your fragrance to your melted oils. If you are doing an EO I would add about 1/2 oz (depending on the EO). Mix until it starts thickening up. Not necessarily to trace. Pour some of your mixture out into a small bowl and add 1/2 tablespoon of clay. Mix until all clumps are gone. Dump this back into your main mixture and mix until trace. Then pour into your mold.

HTH.

No worries, we just have to remember that alot of new soapers come here to learn. And I don't want it to be this community that send them to a link like that! Then they'll come back her posting about how they mixed the soap in their skillet and it splashed everywhere or reacted with the metal. lol or who knows what!

Were I a touchy individual I'd be saying
"hang on, that wouldn't happen to me, I can think on my feet"
But seeing that when I tried my first basic soap recipe I put the oven on at 170° C rather than 170° F (and those instructions were very clear) I guess that might be me.
At the moment I'm just researching and really am not going to even touch CP until I think I've got it 100% (or maybe 90% at least) clear in my head
and yes, I am so very much here to learn.
It's been that long since I've studided I'm having to concentrate twice as hard

Hey there agriffin. I just came back to find the recipe above you gave me way back in December and I realised I never came back and said thank you. I made my first batch of mud soap and I was more than happy with it. I'm sure it will get better and I'll improve as I go along, but I handed the mud soap out to friends and family and they were all more than pleased with it.
I love these sites but I am one of a lurker rather than contributing (that and I know little about soap making to make and informed contribution)
Anyways, thanks for the recipe and I'm just about to crack off another batch.
