Hi all,

I would LOVE to make a maple scented soap, but would prefer not to use a synthetic fragrance oil. Can I add maple syrup to a recipe? Would the smell come through in the finished product? Would I have to adjust the liquids?

Or is there another way to get the maple smell? I make organic soaps, so my main concern is that it's not anything synthetic.

Thanks for the help!

Jackie

sadly the maple syrup smell does not come through in the soap.

Here's a thought, that I have never tried, but might one day!
When I made honey soap, I used 1T ppo, and the honey scent, though altered, comes through.

Try a small test batch. This is something I will try one day:

Buy some grade B maple syrup (because it's more maple-flavored and slightly less sweet) and to reduce by half (do this slowly on the stovetop) I have done this to make cookies, as a way to have the amount of syrup I want, but with less of the liquid.

Then you could use 1T ppo of your condensed maple syrup, which will be thick, so you'd have to add it warm at trace, or to the lye water. And see if it comes through. (And watch out for it overheating, as it is a sugar!)

My guess is that it will be mildly scented, and slightly altered in scent as the honey soap is.

I had to try this. I did a small test batch over the weekend. Nothing. No scent AT ALL.

Maybe you could make sugar cubes (as per instructions here http://soapmakingforum.com/forum/viewto ... 0983ba52b2 ) page 4

but use maple sugar instead (making your own organic maple sugar would be the cheapest way to go. and it's not hard, but time consuming. and use a pot with tall sides, so it doesn't bubble over)
