Hey everyone!

I'm new to the lotion making scene and am having a little bit of a problem. Here is the recipe I have:

.25 cup olive oil
.25 cup coconut oil
1/8 teaspoon allantoin
Tablespoon aloe Vera gel
1 tablespoon beeswax
1/2 teaspoon borax
1/4 teaspoon vanilla essential oil
1/4 teaspoon eucalyptus essential oil
1 teaspoon glycerin

When I apply the lotion, I feel a light burning sensation. Is my Ph too low? Is there too much essential oil? Save me =( thanks!

Well, for starters, what IS the pH?

And where did you get the formula?

There are some great lotion makers here whom I am sure will be able to help.

Im sorry, I misworeded that. I was wondering if that mixture would create a more acidic llotion or not. I haven't gotten any strips yet. How would I make it more basic if it were acidic?

I got the recipe online.

I haven't made lotion yet but I have begun to research it.

I would steer clear of recipes or formulations that are calculated by volume instead of weight, like this one.

please, someone correct me if I am wrong but I was just reading this evening that borax is not good internally/externally, appaarently it can cause skin irritations, if this is truly the case could this be the problem? just a thought, i've only ever used the stuff in my clothes washing liquid.

Here is a recipe I have not had a chance to try yet, I have had it for awhile and dont remember where I got it. but maybe you might want to try:

8 oz basic lotion recipe

1 oz Glycerin
1 oz Stearic Acid
1 oz Emulsifying Wax
2 oz Sweet Almond or Jojoba Oil
3 oz distilled water
1/2 t grapefruit seed extract
1/2 t fragrance oil (opt)

Measure out first 5 ingredients & put into a glass measuring cup. Microwave 2 1/2 minutes or until solid ingredients are melted. Blend with stick blender until fully blended. Add preservative and fragrance oil and blend until incorporated. Pour into an 8 oz container and seal tightly. Shake periodically until cool and enjoy!

Best practice would be to heat and hold your ingredients for at least 20 minutes. This recipe also has no preservative. GSE is not a preservative. I wouldn't recommend using this recipe on that basis.

I do know of people who are sensitive to Allantoin, another irritating item I see is the Borax.

I would start by removing the Borax and then change your recipe into percentages so that you can convert them to weights. In general when you make a lotion you want to have 25% oils, 5% Ewax, 65% Water, 1% Preservative (however this will move around a bit depending on your preservative), 2% essential oils or fragrance oils and then you have 2% left over for things like allantoin, vitamin E, dimethecone or additional water.

HTH

Well I have never made lotion from scratch before so I guess I will just toss that recipe out the window and when and if I ever decide to make lotion from scratch I will find one then.

I think that's a marvelous idea. There are many good formulas out there. Swift has a great blog with some - http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/2 ... aking.html.

(Bubbles - the borax is there as a co-emulsifier with the beeswax, so you cannot just take it out. This said, borax/beeswax is a pretty crappy emulsifier anyway so I say take both out and use a more appropriate one!)

Good idea, Soapbuddy.

Then scroll down about 1/3 of the way or a bit more and on the right side of the page under Bath & Body Guides to Ingredients you will find
- Basic Formulating Ideas for Lotions
- Basic Lotion Making Instructions

Good luck.
