Can you use any EO for lip balms? Or like FO, is there such thing as lip safe? I saw somewhere an EO advertised as "Lip Safe", which made me think...shouldn't they all be lip safe? I know that citrus is not a good choice, but just wondering about EOs in general.

Thanks!

They are NOT all safe for lip balms. First off, some are photo-sensitizers and you wouldn't want to promote sunburn on the lips. Second, they need to be the safe for consumption - check with your supplier.

I have used EO's in my lip balms with great success. My friends love them.

The rules I was taught were to never use more than 1% EO and make sure that the EOs aren't irritating or phototoxic.

I bought a non-phototoxic EO for my citrus flavoured one tho. That's really important. A lip balm is for shielding lips, not making them worse. For a lemon flavour I used lemon myrtle to avoid the phototoxic problem. There's plenty of lemon flavours that aren't actually lemon, which is handy. I made a cinnamon and vanilla also, but used only 0.5% EO as the flavours are strong and don't require any more. I like to keep the spice EOs lower because they could be irritating.

I am aware of the photosensitivity and that some EOs can be irritants, depending on what the EO is. I just was not sure if you had to buy "lip safe" as in FO and if there really was such a thing in an EO.

Say if you have a lavender EO for soaping, would that be okay for a lip balm? Sounds like not and that there are specific EOs for lip balms.

I've never seen 'lip safe' EOs. The only time I expect to see that claim is from someone trying to charge you more for the same product.

The EOs I use are the same EOs I'd put in soap or face creams.

I use no more then 3-5 drops of Peppermint EO in a batch of 12 lip balms it gives a very slight tingle to my balm. I have heard that anything more then that is pushing it. 5 gives a slight tingle, and 3 gives a hint of scent.
