If you don't use dried zest , your soap isn't pretty and the zest will be prone to rotting.

I have used the fresh zest before with very nice results... no DOS or anything, Its a wonderful scrubby, colorant and I think it adds a very very very subtle scent

I, too have used fresh zest, but I microplaned (I used the smallest type of zest-er and used ONLY the zest - no pith) and I have had splendid results.

I'm sure that dried is wonderful too, but I like the fresh so far.

same here the pith will most likely degrade pretty quickly...I like to use a lot of zest :)

I have used both fresh and dried lime zest - the soap with fresh zest is now almost 9 months old and is still perfect.

Ian, the overall scent to that batch does seems more 'zesty' .... ummm .... more well rounded maybe? .... than batches I have made using dried zest. I didn't want to use fresh again as I was unsure if it would rot in the soap, but it hasn't so far. If it lasts a year with no issues I will go back to fresh I believe. My zest is very finely grated though, which could make a huge difference to whether it may rot or not :?

I use 1 tablespoon ppo of zest for my soap. That is of the fresh or dried lime zest I prepare myself. I used lemon peel powder purchased from one of my suppliers in another batch when I had no limes available, and it was completely different. I used 1 tablespoon for a 2lb batch and it completely took over the soap! Instead of lime scented (and I used the same eo blend I always do for my lime soap) it smells sort of generic spicy citrus. If I was to use the powdered peel next time I will use maybe 1 teaspoon for a 2lb batch.

I was going to make soap this week and I have fresh lemons I was thinking about using the zest. So the smaller the zest the better, Right? Thank you guys.

Well there I go , I am not going to believe everything I read anymore :? Thanks for clarifying this zest question. :D

Hey BlueSky! DOS is a technical soaping term - stands for Dreaded Orange Spots

Is thought to be caused by unstable oils in soap. Some oils are more prone to DOS than others. If you search the word DOS in the search function here and choose the CP forum you will find heaps of posts about it!
