Layering Hot Process Soaps

Has anyone had success layering hot process soaps? If so, how long between layers did you wait? ( I don't have 2 crockpots to run batches simultaneously, and am worried by the time a 2nd batch is done it might be too late to layer)

Or, anyone had success in layering M&P on top of hot process?

Thinking of doing a __x___ 'n cream type soap, with one layer being the fruity scent and one being the cream scent.

oh to answer your question, LOL, no I haven't tried to layer HP soap but that sounds like a fun experiment... mine usually harden up right away so I can't imagine that working out easily... it gets so hard right away that you can't do much at all with it. I'm sure it can be done though?

lol, no no x is not dirty in this case!

Yeah, it hardens up so quickly that I'm thinking unless I run 2 batches at the same time it's not gonna work well. Maybe I'll try layering some M&P on top to see how that goes, at least that could be quick enough to hopefully have the layers stick!

I haven't had good luck with HP on top of HP. The layers separated. I think it cooled off too quick.

I've done it without much trouble. Just cook the entire amount that you want. When done, separate your layers into containers and color/scent as you wish. I'd say to remove one layer from the crockpot at a time so the rest stays in the warmth. You do have to work quickly, but it's not as bad as a FO that seizes in CP.

i have done it, and what i do it bring my entire batch to trace, then i shove a piece of cardboard down the middle of my crock all the way to the bottom, i color the sides different colors and then put the lid on and let it cook. once it is ready i stir to get a swirl, or plop in the mold to get patches or i layer it, work fast though, if it gets hard or cols, the layers will not stick.

you can not make one batch then cook a second one for another layer, they separate...

Krissy - thanks for the info. I think I'm going to try it your way, and swirl the two colors before glopping into my mold. This should be fun!! I'll report back if it turns out okay.

ive done it, with success, I didnt let i cool before adding 2nd color, I did the bottom white, then added hot pink, then added more white, the colors didnt bleed and they stayed together, I called it candy cane. Just work fast and bang on solid surface many times.

Darn it I forgot to bang on hard surface many times. I hope nothing gets cought in the holes in the soap while washing.

I have done it on request of a customer wanting a bar that was scrubby on one side and regular soap on the other. It required a lot of flattening with the wood piece I use to get smooth tops.

What if you warmed the top of the bottom layer with a heat gun, just to get it soft so that your second layer could "stick" to it. Maybe then stick it in the oven for a few to make sure both layers get nice and cozy together!!! Just an idea, I've never done it.. so proceed with caution! lol

I know this is an old post, but just wanted to say that I attempted to use a heat gun to layer hot process soap, but it seemed to dry it out more! Putting into a 170 degree or so oven for 5 mins. or so seemed to help better than the heat gun.
