ok guys...what did I do wrong?

I was trying my hand at laundry soap - a new one on me!

I used give or take a cup full of reasonably raw soap from my peppermint batch, about 3 liters of water, and about 2/3rd fo a cup of borax and 2/3rd of a cup of washing soda. Heated it all up to steaming (not boiling) and whirred the stick blender. This was last night. Seemed to form a good mixed liquid. Turned off the stove to let it settle.

this morning i have clear liquid on the bottom, a slight whitish scummy layer and on top of that a pink scummy layer (my soap I assume, the top bit at least as the peppermint soap was red and white).

is it supposed to do that?!

It's fine....just stir it up before you use it. Soaps made with sodium hydroxide and then melted just do that.

It will be okay! :)

Homemade laundry soap looks a little funny. Kinda egg drop soup consistance. Just shake and use.

for some reason I had it in my head they should turn into a jelly like stuff?

Mine dose, but I grate my bar of soap and then disolve it in boiling water, then dump that mixture in a bucket with the borax and washing soda. I would think it may have to do with the raw soap, but I am no expert.

More than the raw soap, it depends on the oil blend you use and the amount of soap you use. I've had everything from egg noodle soup to almost true soft soap. It all works fine.

roughly a cup...and it was a mix of olive (about 45%), pko, coconut, sunflower, canola, caster, stearic acid, grapeseed and fragrance.

Does that help any?

edited to add: I was doing some big batches and it was whatever i scraped out of my pots and jugs ;-)

Yeah....that would make a softish batch of laundry soap. No worries, it still cleans fine, and IMHO, that's the best way to make it.....with whatever is left over!

:)

Yep, I figure why waste good new soap when I can use leftovers?

thanks Mike!
