Yesterday (before everyone gave me the great input on loaf trimming), I made a HP batch with 12 oz Coconut Oil (76 deg), 12 oz Palm Oil, 6 oz Canola Oil, 3 oz Castor oil, 3 oz Sweet Almond oil. Based on soapcalc, these should come out to be very well balanced bars of soap. (INS was spot on 160). I used 2 oz of the White Tea and Ginger FO from Brambleberry and unfortunately put it in while the soap 'batter' was too hot, and most of it evaporated. My house smelled amazing...the soap probably won't pick up much of the scent at all. Live and learn.

I think I may have done something wrong though. There's a subtle marbling (which I think actually looks nice, but may be indicative of something). The problem is that some of the bars have big white spots on them.

My gut instinct is telling me I didn't cook it long enough, and if this is the case, then I should be able to just let the bars cure longer and those spots should saponify, right?

Any ideas as to what caused this and what I should do to resolve it? (even if the resolution is toss the batch into the rebatch pile or shred it for laundry.)

Are the spots 'zappy'?

If not, they are most likely soap that was hardened around the edges of your crock pot that didn't absorb color and/or fragrance, but ended up in the finished bars.

I've had that happen. People generally seem to like the 'rustic' look. As long as it's not zapping, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Sometimes the 'marbled' look is because the fragrance wasn't mixed in well enough. The soap is usually fine after a week or two.

Thanks for the input. It's definitely not zappy; actually quite the opposite. It was overwhelmingly soapy, so I guess it's not a lye issue. I did scrape the sides of the crockpot a little, so I suspect you are right, and that is the cause. I'll have to be more careful next time!

Thanks!
