Lard soap possible problem...

I bought lard from Walmart and did a batch with 32% and didn't smell bacon at all. When I made it I didn't even know that it could be possible that it might smell like bacon. I didn't even once think "something smells like bacon" the entire time. I've made the same recipe twice. Strange that others have smelled it so strongly...

I'm thinking that just like tallow if you keep your temps down while melting you won't get the bacon scent. Of course I could be really, really wrong since I've not worked with lard, just tallow.

I am a totally new soaper.. only about 4 weeks.. but the only fat we use in our soap is lard. We raise heritage hogs and we have literally hundreds of pounds of fat after selling chops and bacon. So we rendered it and into soap it is going. I don't think it has any lard-ish smell to it and it certainly doesn't smell like bacon. I almost wish the unscented stuff did smell a bit like bacon.

Your smell must be because it is store bought lard, which not only is rendered at higher heat but they add stablizers to it so they can leave it out on the shelf. We rendered at low temps, all day long and toss any dark, smelly lard out to the birds (once it is hardened up again).

Anyway. glad yours is losing its off smell.

Mmmmm bacon. I saw Bacon soap online not too long ago. Looks pretty cool: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/da14/?srp=2 It isn't a lard soap though. It would be super cool to have a bacon scented soap that was made with lard!

I know that my first batch and bar out of it had the bacon smell. For some reason it just does not smell that good in the bathroom. Bacon smells better in kitchen when cooking.

We have a member that made bacon soap several years ago which looked like bacon. That was before we had bacon scent available so I'm not sure if she has made it since....
