I was wondering if I do not make any therapeutic or pharmaceutical claims on my soap do I still have to label it? The reason I ask is because bigger store like Lush do not wrap their soap? How do I get away with this? They do however have one sign with each product with all the ingredients. Is this acceptable?

Thanks

Please read up on Canada's cosmetic regulations.

Lindy can probably provide you with a lot more information.

Lush is a great source of inspiration, but they do a lot of things that aren't advisable.

What do you mean arn't advisable? I do know that a lot of companies do not follow the laws because the penalties are not that bad and they just pay them as them come. And it isn't worth their time to follow the laws. Is this the case?

I have spoken with Health Canada regarding Lush and as long as you have a sign with your soap display and supply a label on the package that you wrap the soap in you are legal. But you must create and supply labels. It is because of all the confusion that I started doing my labeling workshops.

In Canada we are regulated as a cosmetic even without making claims. In the US as long as you call it soap you don't have to label, however I don't feel that is fair to your customer. At any rate, our laws are very well defined and we must register all recipes with Health Canada if we are going to sell. There are some changes coming down the pipe that are actually rather exciting.
