I bought some Armour Lard (Manteca, in the green/white box) this morning at the grocery to try for soaping.
When I got home and read the bottom, it says 'Lard and Hydrogenated Lard'. There's also citric acid added for freshness.
I'm unfamiliar with lard, just want to make sure if this is ok and that there's not different kinds?

The amount of citric acid would be my only concern, but as others have tried it, there must not be enough to cause any problems with neutralizing the lye. As for the hydrogenation, that could actually be a good thing, at least as far as preventing DOS and how long the bar will last before it might go rancid. Lard has fatty acids in it with carbon-carbon double bonds, which, when oxidized, cause DOS. The hydrogenation of some of the fatty acids would eliminate some of those double bonds, reducing the amount of fatty acids that would be susceptible to oxidation.

I use it all the time and love it. I'd rather use a lard bar than a palm bar any day. Let us know how yours turns out, and be sure to post pics for us!

Here's my cut bars, I guess it was silly of me to use so much color in a lard bar. I'd like to do another to see how white it is. I tried a 7% SF this time. They don't look at all like I intended, but they smell reeally good..Peak's Cranberry-Apple Marmalade:

Thank you! I just tagged & dated all my slices that were a wk + old. I put them in my closet in a box to wait for full cure.
I can't wait to give them away!...and use :)

by the way, those are some great lard bars!! you couldnt have chose a better scent it goes perfect with the design!

They are lovely! I have never made soap with lard, but after seeing yours I am going to give it a try. What did you use for color? I love the yellow, the two color blends are great. I have not heard of that scent, do you mind if I ask where you purchased it. :)

Thank you! Cranberry-Apple Marmalade from Peak's.
I used Red & Orange Oxides for color.

That is the same LARD I use... I seem to make all of my batches with lard now.... Uses less olive oil (cheaper) and I love the bars.... I give away lot's of soap, so easier on the budget... :D
