Hi everyone

I'm going to make my second ever batch of soap tonight once the kiddies are in bed :) ( can't wait!!)

I have coconut oil, palm oil, lavender essential oil and violet colouring.

My question is, are these ingredients enough to make a nice bar of soap?

Any recipes I've found online all include olive oil as well as the other oils, so I was wondering what difference it would make to the end result if I missed the olive oil out? ( I've not got any and won't be able to get some before tonight)
Should I just be patient and wait till I've got some - trouble is I don't think I can wait

Thanks :D

Oh - what amounts of each oil should I use to nake a small batch?

I don't want to make too much just now coz I'm still practicing and experimenting?

Thanks again :)

you can make a very nice soap with just coconut and palm - it's one of my basic combinations. I recommend 75% coconut and 25% palm. Set your superfat at 15%, though - and you will need the full 4 weeks cure for it to be mild. you will need to soap pretty warm, so be prepared for your recipe to trace quickly - and be sure to let it gel.

you have NO other oils? no cooking oils? a touch of canola can be nice (10% or less), sunflower and safflower are great too. LOVE lard - but it's very similar to palm. Crisco kicks butt as well.

I have sunflower oil, a bit of lard and some vegetable shortening ( Crisp 'n' dry - is that the same as Crisco?)
What would you recommend out of these?

Thanks x

Lard makes awesome soap , I just tried it on the weekend .OMG the lather is something else. You could plug the amount you have into soap calc and have some fun . Shortening is very nice too .

I'm going to try my first batch with lard. If I wanted to substitute out something in my basic OO-CO-PO recipe with lard, what would you replace, the palm or the olive?

I just made my first real lard bar and I love it . this is what I used . You can do whatever you like I am just showing the percentages . I thought my skin would protest the CO amount but it doesn't .
I used 33.3% Lard
33.3% Olive Oil
22.2% Coconut Oil
11.2% Shea Butter
I made 3 lbs so I added 3 TBSP icing sugar for bubbles
On the soap maker program this recipe is a 6.3 for hardness - 4.6 Fluffy Lather (hence the sugar) 6.1 Stable Lather and 6.3 for moisturizing . It is a nice recipe . You don't have to add shea butter , but my skin likes it .

Thanks Kitn. I see you did away with the Palm oil. That's what I had though but just wanted to hear it from one of you experts.

just for interests sake, palm oil & lard behave similarily in soap & are interchangeable. Consequently you can choose one or the other.
Likewise palm kernel oil & coconut oil behave similarily in soap & are interchangeable & you can choose one or the other.
