interesting results from test recipe

been wanting to try a batch with crisco in it, so i decide to make a batch today
crockpot HP
crisco 48 0z
castor 8 oz
olive 8oz
palm 8oz
coconut 8oz
water 28oz
gm 2oz
lye 10oz
at trace 1 tsp ppo shea oil, 1tsp ppo glycern, 1grm shea butter ppo
started up double boiler, tossed in 1 tsp olive and 2 heaping tsp hershy dark choclate coco powder, stired well
let crock cook till gel state, about 30mins
dipped 1/3 of gel into DB with the olive an coco, mixed quick till all dark
dipped a layer of gel from crock into mold
drizzeled and blobbed spoonfulls from coco gel in DB into mold
and repeated the layers till out of soap gel
swished handel of spoon through it a couple times and put lid on
heard its hard to get that to work with HP but what the hey i gave it a go my way. lol
can hardly wait to unmold and cut it an have a looksy.

the interesting results happened while i was cleaning up
nice rich creamy thick lather
better than i expected
anxious to give this one a try

hmm, veary interesting.
looks like cow spots, lol.
should have stirred it a touch.
but owell, i think it looks pretty nice.
just out of the mold and cut.
a touch soft still but i think and hope it will harden nice in a week or two.
ran it through soapcalc. the numbers say it should be harder than my last batch by a long shot.

Do you mind me asking, why the glycerine? I have some but can't remember why I bought it (long time ago). I'd also love to try your recipe if you don't mind - I just bought some bb's strawberry and I'll bet it would be an interesting addition (nothing quite like strawberries and chocolate)

i used the coco powder for colorant and it darkins the scent of drakkar
if you catch what i mean there, best discription i could come up with. lol
you dont realy notice the coco, but the drakkar is vear dark and intoxicating.

i think i'll try an iceing pipper for the color gel next time
would have more control over the color gel

as far as the glycerine goes.
have you ever made bubbles for your kids bubble wands?
a trick we learned while our son was in cub scouts.
to make the bubbles last longer and not pop so badly
or to give them elasticity. add the glycerine to the bubble soap.
magicians use alot of glycerine to produce those giant bubbles.
and sure you can give it a try

Assuming your lye amount is correct, it's soft because you essentially used a 25% lye solution (30 oz of liquid + 10 oz of lye). and the glycerine may be contributing as well.

Crisco contributes to marvelous soap. And yours looks lovely.

Layne: Even though you were not trying for cow spots, it really looks great with the cocoa! I think you've come up with something there. You could call it cocoa cow...chocolate cow...moo moo chocolate...

i ran this through soapcalc at first. then i ran it through mms.
at a 5% sf this is the amount of lye and liquid suggested by both.
perhaps i should reduce the liquid.

however, after trace and after the fo and touch of extras was added
mixed well and in a couple of mins it solidified nicely in the crock
real solid, so i had to use a heavy plastic spoon to cut through it with force
then in about 30 mins it went to gel state, then into molds

now the question is
will it return to that nice solid state after a bit of a cure time?
after 24 hours on the cure rack it is still veary soft
i know thats not long, but in a week or two will it harden?
since its CPHP its cure out time should be relitively short
my last batch had a hardness of 28 and iodine of 92 and firmed up nice after a couple of weeks
this batch has a hardness of 30 and iodine of 79

I believe it is a vegetable shortening, we have Trex and Cookeen in the uk.

wow, always thought of crisco as world wide
goes to show what i know. lol
its a vegetable shortening made from soy bean and palm oils.

a cheaper brand like astor is made from soy bean and cotton seed oils.
