My second batch CP

12 oz Crisco
2oz cocoa butter
8 oz coconut oil
½ oz lavender eo
8 oz h2o
3.1 lye
1 tbsp ground lavender buds

It has been out of the molds(individual) for 5 days now and I think I have DOS. Is the soap ruined or can it be saved? Is it safe to use?
It looked so good when I took it out of the molds and smelled great.

soap

what kind of spots or discoloration? does it smell "off"?

ran it thru soapcalc-you have a 6% discount, which is fine.

the only thing i could think is causing this is the crisco- i never use more than 20-25% of soybean oil because i had so much trouble with it in the past.

with the heat and humidity around the house, i've had to virtually eliminate it in my soap.

It still smells great, lavender. The spots seem to be around the ground lavender, but I can't tell for sure. Kind of orangey brown. I know that the bars that I put into the football shaped silicone molds came out with an orange tint to them, even though I used a thin layer of vaseline on them. The mold was a pumpkin color, wilton mold. I thought even tough I'm not much for football the shape of the mold was great, and it was on clearence at wally world. I will try to get pics up to let you see what you think.

I think the colour that you are talking about is your lavender, not DOS. Because lavender is a plant material the lye reacts to it, that's what you're describing. Nothing too worry about.

DOS takes weeks if not months to develop. You just have a bit of discoloration from the lavender pieces - not to worry!

soap

i'm thinking its the ground lavender buds then. dos is usually irregular spots, but if its around the lavender bits, it will eventually turn brown. i had some green tea bags break and tea leaves escape into my liquids. they did the same thing.

soap

it's amazing what just a spoonful of plants can do to soap! i would have been a little alarmed also! i always colored my lavender soaps, so it didnt look as startling as your pic's. they should tone-down to a kind of dull brown as the soap dries.

I actually like the look of the natural soaps with the spices/botanicals...I am however learning how to work with colour, jsut haven't decided what I want to do with it yet.... 8)

I think it looks lovely - not DOS.

But store your soap carefully because with that level of Crisco it may be prone to DOS down the road a bit.

I'll bet it feels lovely to use.

Could tea leaves create WHITE spots as well?
I made a batch with red tea leaving in the tea leaves. Overall it looks and smells great... but many of the bars have tiny white spots that are almost like little cavities... about the size of a pin head. They stand out a bit against the reddish brown soap.

I have zap tested them by putting my tongue directly on the dots and they just taste like soap. I also PH tested the soaps as well as the dots themselves and I get a 7 either way. Finally I tried washing my hands and it feels just fine... so I don't think it is undissolved lye.

I feel certain I blended the oils as well as the lye VERY well.
The oils I used were Olive, Coconut, Palm, and Castor.
I used tea instead of water (minus the tea leaves) for the lye mixture and also added a small amount of salt for extra hardness. I then added the tea leaves to the oils before adding the lye.

soap

i'm guessing, now, but maybe it's the salt crystals? did you dissolve them before adding to your soap?

i have also come accross a few threads that palm oil might do that also if its not melted and blended first (i guess it can separate?) i use homogenized, but have to be careful that it doesnt melt and separate in the heat down here. this seems to be more of an issue with rtcp.

MamaT - those are beautiful Lavender soaps! So white and creamy, I bet they'll be wonderful to use! :D

Is soap that has DOS not safe to use? If so is there any way to salvage it?

Same sorta questions I had, Mama.

Last time I checked, DOS was a computer term. Wow, do I ever have a lot to learn!

What is DOS?

Anyone?
