Howdy everyone! I'm extremely new to the sport of soap making. I decided I wanted to try it when I was thinking up inexpensive Xmas gifts. I found an idea on Martha Stewarts page- it made soap making seem really simple. SHE LIED. There is way more to it than I ever imagined, but I feel like I'm in too deep to turn back. I have my heart set on making these **** soaps! So I'm here to find out more and hopefully learn a new skill! Please have patience with me. I'm looking forward to finding out more and hopefully I will manage to make a successful soap gift this Xmas!

Well the basic idea was that it was a layered soap, red and white, and it would be peppermint scented. It was only when I did some research that I realised using food colouring, as was suggested on her site,was a terrible idea and also I think it said to use fragrance oils.
The thing is I don't know if I would even be able to get a hold of the glycerin bars, so I would probably have to make it from scratch. I think after looking through this site that a layered soap would be very optimistic!

Since you posted on the M&P forum I know one bit of advice I can give. The glycerin you need to melt and pour is available at most craft stores like Hobby Lobby, Michael's, even many online soap making supply sites.
If you can get it at a local craft store they will often sell fragrance and colorants for melt and pour right next to the glycerin and other melt and pour bases like shea, olive oil and cocoa butter melt and pour soap.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were talking about MP soap. I would have given you different links.
Yes. Food coloring isn't good for soap. It fades or turns ugly (kind of like my social life).

See this is the thing, I don't really know which way to go. I've been looking at the links you gave me above and it's starting to seem a little less daunting. I just didn't expect it to be this complicated! I might try the M&P for christmas so I'm not feeling too much pressure and then try my own from scratch in the new year. Thanks for all of the help, I really appreciate it.

Thanks, I certainly will. I think what I'm going to do is make the MS soap, with a few variations (like the oil and colouring) and using some of the tips I've already learned from being on here. A few of the reviews commented that their layers didn't bond properly and I think it's because MS's instructions include leaving 20 mins between each layer. I think I'll have a good idea of when to add the new layers and hopefully avoid that problem. After Xmas I think I'll adventure into cold process, I just don't want to take on too much. We are already making gift hampers for our families which include the soap, pot pourri, mini bottles of mulled wine, ginger biscuits and homemade candy. So we have a lot going on!
Spray rubbing alcohol on the soap before you pour in the next layer. It makes the layers adhere better.
