I received my 3 very expensive of Hump fat yesterday, but 2 out of 3 jars were broken. It is disgusting how shoddy some package. There was a very thin wrap of small bubble wrap on each jar and they were put in a box to roll around. Duh, do you think they would break...the distributor is going to send out 2 new jars.

I rubbed some on my hand last night and it reminds me of the feel of FCO, it absorbs quickly and does not leave a greasy feel, so I am thinking it is going to go into a lotion. I am going to make a teeny tiny test batch just to find out how it feels in soap, but at the price it is to costly for using in soap. The cost is $20 per 14 oz jar plus shipping.

I am going to melt down the fat in the broken jars, melt and strain it though a coffee filter and figure I will use it for a single oil test batch, since I cannot make anything for sale with it. I am just having a hard time throwing it away. Last night I put the jars in the freezer so I can get it out of the broken jars, scrape down the top, bottom and sides hoping to scrape off the fine glass and proceed to melt it down. I am also thinking about washing it a couple of times and maybe that will get off any leftover glass. Anyone with ideas, DeeAnna....have any suggestions how to save it for my own use?

Also thinking I will split the amount with my tallow/lard recipe, if nothing else it will give label appeal, except to vegans :)

Its so frustration when sellers don't package properly. Personally, I would ship something like that is glass, why didn't they use plastic jars?
I think saving the fat from the broken jars is a great idea. I'd filter it through one of those reusable coffee filters then wash it with plenty of water to remove any glass bits. I don't expect any would make it through the filter but safe than sorry. I would likely use it in soap.

I agree with your thoughts and Obsidian's advice. After filtering, let the liquid fat set for a bit and slowly pour off the fat, leaving any residues in the bottom. Small glass fragments are likely to be nearly invisible in melted fat, so I'd err on the side of discarding a bit more fat to be on the safe side, versus trying to save every drop.

I really, honestly, sincerely doubt there would be any glass fragments in the fat after filtering and decanting and washing, but I also agree it would be unethical to sell anything made with it.

Thankyou you both. I am going to scrape off a decent layer from all the sides, and know I will not be able to see the glass in the melted which was why I was thinking wash it. I was going to use paper filters but will go with the re-usable coffee filter and go with washing it after. Nope, it will not go in anything for sale. This shall be my project for the day.

They have shipped me replacements already. Can't complain about their customer service. I see Hump Day Soap with the milk and Hump day lotion in the very near future :). It is really an amazing feeling oil although I cannot say I would cook with it, as I do not like the flavor of it
