Hello Yall! I am so exicted to start this adventure with my wife. I am so fired up about it and it was all my idea. I have so many questions but I think I will just read posts to get a general idea of what I am getting into. I am going to be the soap/candle chef and my wife is talented in making baskets and wreaths. I just hope that we can have as much fun as I am imagining. We are not looking to get rich by no means, just hoping that people will enjoy our treasures. Good luck to all and I sure hope that I get some real good ideas on here. All of our scents and baskets will be based on memories of the Texas Hill Country and West Texas. Both of those parts of Texas is just wonderful. Well, its time to be nosey in the forums.....

Welcome to the soap making forum.
I understand you're going to jump right in and start selling your soaps without any knowledge and experience?
The mod team strongly discourages that at this soap making forum.

I'm glad you're not looking to get rich; cause if that was possible all our selling members would be on the bahamas sipping cocktails while waiting on Ian to come by to give 'em massages  :p

Soapmaking is a craft that should be taken very seriously and you'll probably need (depending on how much time you put in daily) years to get to the point where selling is considered to be safe.

Not saying it's impossible; but it takes huge amounts of time, efford and some money too.

Here some info on selling: http://soapmakingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12375

Have fun around here!

Hi...I'm also new to the forum...this is a great place to learn from knowledgeable and creative people. When I started making soap I bought books on soapmaking and spent every day fascinated by this wonderful craft. For easier reference, I think a finally just printed out most of kathy miller's site....for bedtime reading.I studied everything I could about the different properties of oils and worked the online calculators to death...searching for a special combination. I'm embarrassed to say that it was it be 2 years before I made my first batch. But..talk about excited. I think your idea for a line of soap that is reminiscent of the hill country is lovely..good luck....have fun! Oh, check out kathy miller's page it's a good place to start. http://www.millersoap.com/.

Believe me, I am spending lots of time preparing and in the last three days, i have made seven large batches of practice soap. I have the guidance of someone who has experience in working with this stuff and am following his advice each time I speak with him. I also read this forum constantly, watch the soap making videos, read information from numerous soap making web sites.

This is a project that I am not taking lightly. I have a full time job and on my days off and in my spare time I am either on this forum getting advice, watching a video, or listening to my faithful friend who is full of information and ideas. I then spend my evenings making soap. He has been doing this with his wife for seven years and they are pretty darn successful at this.

I do not plan on selling anything until the last week of April 2010. Right now I am sharing with family, close friends, and some co-workers. I am just getting a "feel" for things right now.

I had to "name" my company in order to file for a DBA and apply for a State Tax ID # so that I can buy in bulk without paying sales tax here in Texas. And before I start selling at certain venues, I wanted to make sure all the paperwork was completed and have a good "reputation" with some other vendors/suppliers. In addition, at some places/venues, you have to be registered as a DBA before you can set up shop.

This will also help me when I purchase my little workshop to be built in my back yard just for making soaps and candles.

I have lots of faith in this project/hobby. I am sure that yall can relate to the great feeling it is when someone uses your product and gives you very good feedback about what you have made. Like a chef cooking a meal, or granny relishing in watching her family eat her cooking. It just inspires you to work harder and do more.

I hope I am making sense in all this. I still have several more months before I start selling anything. Right now by giving the stuff away, I can get a feel for what is sorta "in demand."

I strongly suggest at least 6 months of stability testing of your products AFTER you find the right formula. You need to know that it won't go rancid in a variety of conditions, that your packaging will hold up, that it'll hold up to the rigors of shipping (should you end up selling out of your area), that your fragrances will hold up, that your colorants won't fade...

Have fun with it, but remember - people expect quality and if they don't get it they get mad. Mad customers are not repeat customers.

Welcome to the forum, I just joined as well about 6 months ago. Just want to wish you and your wife good luck.

Like I have stated in a previous post, I have experience in selling retail and have done so in the past. I'm not taking this venture on by myself. I have someone already in the M&P business in a close by town that is working with me on this.

It seems that everyone thinks that I am jumping into this blindly. I have taken the necessary precautions and have guidance from an experienced M&P'er who has been successful in his own ventures. He is looking to get out of it and I am wanting to take his place, in a way at least.

In other posts, ppl have assumed that just because I am recently getting into this that I am jumping the gun.

It is kind of like an entreprenuer taking over a restaurant from a previous owner with an established customer base. You keep with what works, and don't change anything. It is an established place. Thats pretty much what I am doing. I am just learning and have guidance from someone who knows what he is doing.

Nope - didn't say you were jumping into it blindly. Just offering some advice based on some of my own mistakes. I've made a lot!
