how many different products and selections should you have before you open an online store? like is it ok to start off a store and only carry soap? or do recommend having other things available?

I'm getting ready to open my online store at the end of the month. I have a little bit of a few different things. I'm going to have about 12 varieties of soap when I open, some body butter, sugar scrub, bath salts, bath bombs, bubble bath, and soy candle tarts.... all the B&B stuff will be available in about 5 different fragrances. Over time I will add more scents and maybe a few more products.

i started w/ soap, and just recently added lip balm. i think i have 13 varieities of soap and one flavor lip balm. i will be adding additional flavors.

P.S. - I should have also mentioned that if you are only experienced in/comfortable selling soap, just start out with soap! I wouldn't rush to add more products to your line just so you have a selection.

I just started making B&B stuff around January (when I seriously started planning my business). I've had 6 months to perfect my recipes and I'm glad I had this time. It took a long time to come up with B&B recipes I was happy with, just like it took a lot of time to come up with good soap recipes!

This is just my personal outlook, but I think it is better to jump in and change course along the way, than to wait for having the "right" amount of products, etc. Just do it. Add more things as you go. This will get you started and on your way.

Leap, and the net will appear.
