How many standard recipes do you have in your basic repertoire? I would like to have only 2, maybe 3, and then maybe tweak them a little with a tiny bit of special oils. But so far, I am still searching for the magical balance of cleansing and moisturizing. I can't seem to get bubbles without it being drying.

Anyway, how many base recipes do you use regularly?

I have one base recipe, a mix of OO, PO, CO, Cocoa Butter and Castor. Depending on oil prices I might sub RBO for the OO, PKO for the CO or another butter for the cocoa but the proportions are the same. I use this 90% of the time. Of course, if I sub any oils, I run it through a lye calculator.

When I make salt bars, I do 90% CO, 10% other and 20% SF

I have a luxury break the rules bar that has no CO, PO, or OO, thereby departing from the holy trinity of soaping oils. I make this for my special female friends for Mother's Day and other special occasions. It has virgin avocado, babassu, and kokum butter among other ingredients.

Great question - I've often wondered about the same thing!

I have a few oils and butters that I use in most of my recipes, but then I vary the proportions and special oils depending on my objective for the batch .... So for example, if its a facial soap, I use a higher percentage of OO or if its for sensitive skin I use a low proportion of CO, etc. And some bars, mostly the ones I make for friends and family as gifts (or a treat for myself), I use more of the premium oils than I would in a regular batch.

4: castile, lard, vegan blend and animal/veggie blend. The proportions in each basic recipe may get changed up if I run out of an oil or if I need a recipe to trace super slow or whatever. Working on a premium recipe for face soap right now so that will be #5.

Goat milk, salt soap, laundry/cleaner bar. I want to add a shea/cocoa/avocado soap and maybe a castile. I felt more comfortable spending more time perfecting a recipe to fit everything I want than mucking around with several recipes.

My plan going forward is (4): Standard w/ lard, standard w/ palm, salt bar, and shampoo bar. May add a fifth bastille soap unscented/uncolored.

(3) Standard milk soap (usually buttermilk, sometimes goat, coconut or yogurt); salt bar, shampoo bar. I too vary the oils depending on the batch.

10% coconut oil
5% castor oil
85% other oils (palm, olive, rice, lard, sunflower, neem, etc)

I'm glad to hear that most people just use a couple of base formulas. Now if I can just find my one "perfect" recipe! I'm having fun trying!!

I use one that I add or subtract from like adding salt or taking away milk. Or even change one oil like safflower to almond. But the amounts are always the same, unless I mess up :) on the main 3/4 oils.
