Something that surprised me too living in the US after being an expat who bemoans the use of imperial measurements in the US - the US Military uses metric! So even here in the US all the scientists, the transplants from metric lands AND anyone who was in the military should be familiar with metric. No wonder it gets confusing sometimes...

I imagine it's like being able to speak more than one language. A person just gets used to switching back and forth.
