how do i get petals to stay on soap?

Hi there
I have just started making soap and wanted to make a simple vanilla soap with rose petals on top. I bought some pre certified soap to make it easier, but dont now how to get the petals to stick on the top of the soap. If i put them on too early they sink, and then i tried it again and waited a bit longer and one corner of the soap went brown under the petals - help!!

Unless the petals are preserved, they will turn brown.

It has been my experience that the lovely bars of soap you see at the fairs w/ the roses & such on top, have had the roses places there minutes before the door opened.
