The price of palm kernel has jumped from 60$ for 50 lbs to $130 for the same amount in the past 6 months on WSP's website. If this continues, I'll be out of business.

Anyone have a lead on some alternate suppliers? Or perhaps a suitable replacement that is reasonably priced? Rice bran, maybe?

Any suggestions would not only be greatly appreciated, they just might help feed my large family and keep my farm afloat.

I know what you mean about the cost of soapmaking supplies! I had an interesting experience with WSP and cocoa butter. Right on the website it states that WSP will price-match a competitor if you can find the same product at a better price. Well, I e-mailed them at least 3 weeks ago about price matching some cocoa butter that was considerably cheaper at Brambleberry and I am still waiting for a return e-mail! If they have no intention of following through with that offer, then they should remove it from the website!! Sorry about the vent!
In response to the other question...I have soaped with both palm oil and palm kernal oil and could not tell much difference in the finished soap. Both oils contribute many of the same qualities (hard bar, bubbly lather). The palm oil was cheaper than palm kernal. Would that be an option?

WSP's prices have gone up because they now include shipping on everything, not just fragrance oils/essential oils.

Soaper's Choice charges about @25 to ship a 50 lb. drum.

I don't see a significant difference between CO and PKO for what it's worth.

I've heard that Oils By Nature has good prices on bulk quantities too.

Good luck!

Palm kernal can be replaced by coconut oil.

yes, WSP's pricing now includes shipping. As others have suggested, check columbus foods.

as far as coconut oil goes, the price of coconut is going to be going up quite considerably because of bad crops this year or something like that so I don't see coconut as being any cheaper of an alternative. most suppliers have already posted warnings on thier websites of the impending rise in the cost of coconut oil.

I do know about the shipping cost being figured into the total price, and that cost comes out to around 30 bucks for the trip. That's still a $40 jump, which is... not sustainable for this long haired, cantankerous soaper-type.

Thanks so much for the help guys. I will indeed pursue these other avenues. I'm disappointed by WSP lately, particularly with their base oils, but also with their EO's.

They don't carry rosewood anymore. Anyone know a good line on that good stuff?

Best,

Kev

Have you checked LTL shipping from SC? It's $160 for up to 1000# to where I live in VA/DC.

I couldn't believe the cost savings when they gave me the quote.

Deda, I'm in Virginia Beach.

Pinch me if you'd like, but I'm starting to get excited... I will contact them.

Thanks!

Kev

Is that the price of the shipping or the palm, or both?

Do you have contact info? Can't seem to find a direct line on the net.

Kev

Sorry, LTL means Less than Truck Load.

Shipping charges, only. $160.00 (approx) is what it costs to ship 1000# to my house from Soapers Choice. The cost of the oils and butters is separate.

The savings is substantial, a single 50# pail or box is .35 per lb, and LTL pallets are .16.

WSP now offers 25% discount if you pick up your order, which I couldn't understand why, now hearing this, helps makes sense.

I do hear ya about WSP not being good at really getting back or explaining sometimes.

sounds like you've got it all worked out, but in case you're still exploring:

OBN has PKO for 62.50/50#

Thanks for posting this link. They have better prices than soaperchoice. Of course, I don't know the shipping price which I'd have to take into account. I believe Soaperschoice is in Illinois so the shipping isn't bad for me.

Has anyone bought from OBN? What's the quality of the oils?

Soapers Choice is just 20 mintues away from me.....I just found that out 3 weeks ago....imagine how excited I was!!

Woo hoo! I was checking out OBN to see where they are and they're in Ohio. Hopefully, this would mean the shipping rates would be very reasonable. :D

Kamela -

Does soaperschoice allow pickups?

I ran a comparison between Soaper's Choice and OBN for me (I'm in the Southwest) and Soaper's Choice was cheaper on postage even they both are similar in distance from me. Go figure. Your mileage may vary. Good luck!
