Hello! My name is Jane ... I'm not Japanese, but married to one and live in Japan :) I'm a total novice at soapmaking and just made my first batch last Friday. I cut them up today and leaving them to cure -- just can't wait to see if they will actually be usable in a month's time!

I tried a really basic recipe - water 170 g, lye 62 g, olive oil 250 g, lard 235 g (the recipe calls for 250, but I was having problem with trying to squeeze out the lard). I dunno what might be the problem, but when I cut the soap up today, the middle was really crumbly. The outside looks all smooth and creamy, though :?

Anyway, I plan to start a second bath probably tomorrow ... gonna do castille soap with EO and see how it goes!

Looking forward to learning loads from all of you great people! :)

Welcome!

Be sure to poke around here and read all you can, this forum is FULL of info!

Hi Jane,

Welcome to the forum!

I don't think using 235 g lard would have been a problem. With 62 g lye, it just meant your superfat was about 7% instead of 10%. I'm guessing your batch overheated since it's crumbly in the center but I could be wrong.

I think your soap will be fine. You can place the crumbly bits into a wash bag and still use it this way. This is just a suggestion but on your next batch you might want to try some coconut oil to up the cleansing and bubbles. :D

Thanks for the welcome and for the feedback :) I'll be more careful with temperature next time and see what happens!
