Hi all,
I'm Louise and I enjoy all things crafty. I have been dabbling in soap making for a couple of years now using pre certified base and adding essential oils and oats which seems to make quite a nice bar.

I am eager to get to the 'next level' and go about getting my soap certified. I have had a look online but it all seems very confusing and perhaps quite costly too? I feel I might be getting a little addicted too- I have heard that can happen!

I look forward to being part of the family and look forward to chatting with everyone,

Thanks
Louise :D

Welcome Louise! :)

What do you mean by "getting your soap certified"?

Louise may live in Europe where certification is a requirement for selling, I believe. We have different rules in the US.

Hi all

Blueberry muffins sound great!

I live in Scotland and we have to have our soap checked by a chemist which means we need to send off samples with exact weights, measurements and ingredients etc. I think it is quite a long process and cost a few hundred pounds but I am in very early stages so that's probably a few months off yet!

What are the rules for soapmaking and selling in the U.S?

Louise :)

Well, I don't think the rules are as stringent as in the UK. Basically, you can't make cosmetic or drug claims about your soap. It's just soap - it will clean you. I'm not really knowledgeable about the rules since I've decided I'm not cut out to sell soap. I just like making it.

The soap doesn't have to be tested or have ingredients on the packaging. However, I believe conscientious sellers always list ingredients and weight. It's best to list the ingredients just in case some people have sensitivites or allergies. Generally, I don't buy soap unless it has the ingredients listed on the label. I did buy a couple of bars at our local market out of curiousity to see what other people's soap was like.

They tasted great, too. :D

Yes our rules are lax. Soap is not even considered a cosmetic if all it does is clean/

Technically we don't need to list ingredients, but most do. We ARE required to have the company name, product name, weight, and contact info on the label but that's really about it.

It gets more complicated if we color, scent or do something fun with our soap, but even that is less stringent than for you guys over there.

thanks

thanks everyone-it is interesting to hear the different rules and regulations. I have realised it's quite a complicated hobby (when it comes to selling anyway).
