Hi I'm new to this forum and to soapmaking. I made my first hot process soap batch last week and am looking to make another - this time with dyes. I know I am supposed to put it in with the fragrance, but I am wondering if I take a chunk of the soap and mix it with the dye and fragrance or do I just pour all of it in the crock pot? This is all hot process soap by the way. My second question is how do I find how much liquid dye(i dont have powder) I put in a soap recipe? I haven't found any recipes that have already included how much dye you are supposed to put in so I am a bit lost at how much I am to include.

thanks :)

the cheapest way is the soap dye at michaels , it wont give you real bright colors, but the green and blue work good, the red turns soap pink, orange dye- yellow soap. you can look at some of my past pics if you want. If you want some swirls, take a cup of cooked batter out color it, then fold back in your batch, good luck.

how much dye do i need(i know its proportionate to the amount of oils)? I.E. I have read that you need 1 ounce of frangrance/essential oil for each 16 ounces of oil. What is the dye to oil ratio?

yes 1 ounce of fo per lb of oils, less for some essensial oils(like lavender), of you do hp use 1/2 the amt i just gave you.
Color, despends on how you want it to look, the bottles from michaels are small, i add like 10 drops per 2 lbs of oils, if you get strong color from a soaping co, it would be different, never 1 ounce of color.
what kind of oils are you going to use? i have many receipes i could help you with.
oh, after the cook stir in frag oil, then color, then pour or scoop(with hp) into mold, bang on table or floor to get ait bubbles out. Did you do it yet? lets see pics? what color, what frag oil, from where?

Hey honor- this is completely off topic but you sound like an hp'er. :) Anyway, if you are do you use sodium lactate? I wanted to try it for some swirling action...Let me know if you could.
Thanks! :)

no, i dont, but i Do love hp, if you use 11-14 oz of oo to a 32 oz batch it is pretty slippery in the pot! I have no prob, getting it into mold, i use a log mold lined with contact paper(shelf liner), it works great. Ohm if you want some swirls or rather lines with hp, take a cup of complete batter out of pot, color , fold back in , not much stirring. Or, just add some liquid color(michaels or other) to the pot, stir a couple of times then mold. You can look at some of my past pics. Any questions you can pm me anytime.

Thanks honor, I appreciate it very much. It seems like my batter is pretty slippery because of the olive oil so I'm going to try- what's the worse that could happen?? I get an ugly color, like that hasn't happened before HP or not. :p

It seems like sodium lactate can make soap crumbly so I'm a little hesitant to use it, even though it is cheap. Off to look at your pics! :)
