you would think I could find goat's milk today living in this small town I'm in but Noooooo! No goats milk for me.

So, hemp milk? Is that do-able?

I've not made "milk soap" yet and I have another question....

Do you use the milk as a water replacement when dissolving the lye?

Doncha just love newbies.....

:D hi there!

i use canned goat's milk in the baking section next to the canned milk.

canned milk works fine too-just use the regular not the skim-or i use half and half milk which is wonderful! or coconut milk. and sometimes i get full fat greek yogurt.

i usually split the liquid amount this way- if the batch requires 18 oz liquid, i divide it by 3. 18 divided by 3 =6. i will mix 12 oz water or aloe vera with the lye and let it cool to room temp. i then reserve 6 oz milk.

soap at cool temp-around 90 degrees-add your lye mix and stir thoroughly-i usually use my wire whisk. when fully incorporated i add the milk and then the f/o.

if you are going to use honey mix it in the milk and make sure it is thoroghly dissolved!

i've never heard of hemp milk-do you live in california?

I am right on the border between Idaho and Washington State. The Snake river divides the two. I'm on the washington side in a little town called Clarkston. Very different from Seattle, which I was born and raised.

The hemp milk.....lol....It's always in the fridge. So good for you. My toxicologist has me on a strict diet. poor me.....

:D i used to live in the tri-cities! kennewick and pasco-then wenatchee and south bend. i had enough harsh winters and moved to alabama!

i dont see why you couldn't use hemp milk, but if it's expensive, i dont know if i would. i believe any theraputic value might be lost thru the use of lye.

good luck!

you are so sweet heartsong! thank you so much for replying.

any help or input I can get I'm just so grateful for.

I feel like beeker from the muppets when I'm soaping. I'll get the hang of it though.

btw, we live in the valley so only a couple of weeks of harsh weather each season. up in the higher elevations it's just terrible. Kinda funny though...so nice down here but drive straight up ten minutes and it's just awful.

looking forward to sturgeon fishing this summer with the hubby....I just go along for the ride though, I wince at the thought of hurting a fish myself.

that's one thing i miss-smoked sturgeon-my husband is the master of the smoker!

if you are looking for theraputic value, you might consider incorporating it as part of the liquid in your own lotions. you could even use hemp seed oil.

i make my own olive oil lotions, and let me tell you once you try it, you will never EVER put commercial creams on your body again! and it's easy to make!!!!

www.lotioncrafter.com is a wonderful site. their customer service is great and you can email them any questions.

Hey Ali ,
Can you let us know how the hemp milk works. I was eyeing hemp milk the other day in the health food store. Anything is fair game when making soap lol.

sure, you betcha I will!

I was just trying to come up with a good recipe to incorporate it with.

Do you have any suggestions?

I was just going to go with a goats milk recipe and use the hemp milk instead.....

do you think that would be okay?

oh no, lotions.

I'm seriously going to go broke with my new hobby.

when I got sick I had to stop using EVERYTHING commercial.
very tough to do this day in age.

this could become a serious obsession for me.

:D LOL! good luck trying to bide by a budget around here!

but seriously, lotion making is NOT expensive! a couple glass measuring cups (8 & 16 oz), a stick blender, a spatula, and a few simple supplies and you're making lotion the first day!

i have terribly sensitive skin-i cant wear makeup, and no commercial lotions or soaps!

a very basic recipe (and wonderful!) would be aloe vera juice, emulsifying wax and your choice of oil. voila! in less than a half hour's fuss-youve got lotion!

in the b & b recipe tutorials i posted some recipes, " my favorite lotions #1 & #2" and explained the techniques. i was then "heart of dixie soap co".

i'll bump them if i can find them for you.

Hemp milk is interesting. Never tried it though. I use GM. Walmart has GM cheap. I would think that hemp seed oil would be better if you are trying to use hemp, which happens to be one of my fav oils! If you are trying a milk, I have heard buttermilk is really nice.

Honestly that is just what I need.
My hands get so dried out from bathing then drying the dogs....then bathing and drying again....and again, and again..........and again.....(I had to throw that last one in there)
By day 3 of my work week my hands are cracked and bleeding. and I use my weekend for healing time. I have not yet found a lotion that has worked for me yet, so maybe this is the way to go.

The only resolution I have found so far that works is that I hired a bather.
I was like....this is just crap, I can't do this anymore!! my hands were that bad. Something resembling a seaman that never comes to shore.

they are getting better though, Kylie the girl I hired has been there a couple of weeks and they are starting to heal, but I still have to get back there and train her. Oh, did I mention I groom dogs? sorry.....

thank you again heartsong, what a blessing you are.

That would be fine , you could use it any recipe the same as you would a gm recipe.

believe me, i know the syndrome-bartender's hands! you hands are constantly using cleaners and are frequently in water. they are stripped of their natural oils.

if i may suggest this-protect your hands from getting wet. wear surgical gloves when handling wet items (from dishes to dogs!) after you are done, make sure you dry them thoroughly then apply a small amount of lotion. apply lotion frequently during the day.

at night slather on good and wear cotton gloves to bed. this allows hands to absorb lotion all night and still be able to breathe.

hemp seed oil blended with olive oil and vitamin e would be very theraputic. i would use strong chamomile tea for the water part. comfrey is a great healer.

LMAO.

I know, right? someone should take a picture with me soaping and put it on a greeting card, a sympathy card maybe.......

1) my eyes as wide as tea saucers hoping nobody will stop by unexpectedly with me wearing my rubber gloves, lye in hand and a digital scale.....(small towns, meth problem)
2) guilty shameful look on my face as I'm trying to come up with a good excuse for spending 200 dollars for fragrance and supplies, cause I know the hubby will ask.
3)excited and worried about the batch I'm working on
4)scouring the floor like a crack head cause I know I dropped a lye crystal and it's gotta be somewhere.
and finally
5)peeking over my shoulder waiting for the 4 year old to come bounding in so I can do one of my ninja kicks to stop her from coming in.

:D this is the funnest (?) pursuit i've ever had! what i like the most is that it is good for you, and once you learn the ropes, you are only limited by your imagination (and wallet!)

I have to say, I'm with you. I am having a blast.
I think anyone who likes to be creative, think outside the box has to get addicted to soap making.

how can you not? the possibilities are endless. and it's useful. everybody's gotta wash, huh? or they should at least. and you can donate your scraps and ends to people in need.

I remember working in downtown Seattle. I managed the starbucks on 1st and Yestler, there were some pretty funky smelling folk down there. So sad I picked up soaping later instead of sooner. I could've made the world a better place

almost forgot-calendula and green tea extract and lavender and tea tre oil for healing faster.

i would stick with e/o's until your hands are well healed.

oh, one last thing before i call it a night-

www.libertynatural.com inho has the best customer service and quality ingredients there is. they are located in oregon, so shipping is cheaper for you, too.

i've been a satisfied customer for the last 18 years. their inventory is amazing! they raise and process their own lavender e/o, too.
