Can a soap be lye heavy and not zap? I found an oil in the microwave tonight that I for got to add. My soap jelled beautifully and I have unmolded and it does not zap. I even cut into the bar a bit to check. When I run it through soap calc without that oil and now a 0% superfat it says I used 2 grams too much lye but I also added reconstituted powdered goats milk. Any advise, this was meant to give to a friend who asked for it but I'll make a new batch if you think I should. Thanks!

Personally, I would test pH with a more reliable method. Zero superfat is still risky.

And if you decide that the soap is safe, you should still test how it behaves during use and see if it's not too harsh.

Also, you can run it again through the calculator, accounting for the fat in the goats milk (just read the label to find out how much fat it has, and enter it as milk fat).

Depending on the tongue, it may only be able to tell you if soap is over 11-12 pH, which still isn't very good for the skin.

Also, it's possible that pH is higher inside the soap, compared to the surface (which means that you should test a freshly cut slice).

I've just made a batch with lard and a tad of honey plus wine for lather... the outside is fine but on the inside there's a tiny hole with the tiniest bit of weeping. It's only happened in the very center AND it doesn't 'zap' after being freshly cut...what do you think?

Yours is a different issue. Soap can sweat sometimes, and turn out perfectly fine after cure.

I have only used honey few times, but every time it has caused sweating. I find sugar easier to work with.

Wine for lather ? Never heard of that one ...
