I realized I posted this in the wrong section, so I deleted it and posted it here...
I made a couple of 10 pound soap molds and wanted people's thoughts on their experience with larger molds.
I'm cutting my soap 3.5 x 2.5 x 1.5 so they fit snug into my boxes after they cure. This works out just fine, but I don't want to make so many cuts to get my soaps down to size. My mold is 6" tall x 3.5" wide x 20" long. Which means I have to make 8 cuts to make 8 bricks that are 3.5" x 2.5" x 6". Then I have to cut those bricks 4 times to get 4 bars that come out to 1.5" x 2.5" x 3.5" It's pretty labour intensive and I think the size of the mold is messing with my recipe.
Does anyone else do it this way? Should I make a mold for less cuts? Does the volume of soap inside the mold matter? I usually use 4 lb molds and have never had any issues and the only reason I am switching is because I need to produce more soap faster.
I guess my question is, what's better? A cinder block size mold or a lower and thinner mold with 3 times the length?
