I never recommend using frozen butters in anhydrous products since water will be introduced into it while thawing. Shea have a very long shelf like if keep cool and dark. I store mine in opaque buckets on the service porch, even in the hot summer, it stays fine.
I would not waste shea in my first try at soap. The best to practice with, if you are not opposed to using it, is lard. A 100% lard soap is actually quite nice, and is cheap to practice with. Shea, if purchased from an online supplier is not necessarily cheap.
